The Softball Bayernauswahl U16 secured a third-place finish at the Jugend Länderpokal held from October 2 to October 4 in Paderborn, Nordrhein-Westfalen. Over three days of competition against regional select teams, the Bavarian youth squad navigated a schedule of group matches, a semifinal loss, and a bounce-back to podium standing.
Opening Group Losses Test Bavarian Resilience Against Nordrhein-Westfalen and Baden-Württemberg
The tournament opened on Saturday morning with a challenging matchup against Nordrhein-Westfalen. NRW caught the Bavarian selection off guard, utilizing powerful hitting and defensive execution to claim an 11-1 victory. Bavarian coaches Martina Dobler and Clare Hofpensperger deployed Emma-Fini Köpf and Sophie Stampfl as pitchers, while Nelly Rudorfer handled catching duties. Theresa Hohe drove in Bayern’s lone run of the contest, supported by deep outfield fly balls from Fina Schober that were successfully hauled in by the NRW defense.
Later on Saturday, the team faced Baden-Württemberg in a closely contested battle. Pitcher Fina Schober and catcher Lea Huber anchored a tighter defensive performance, keeping the score close throughout regulation. Despite consistent offensive production across the lineup, time expired under the tournament’s 1.5-hour limit, sealing a 9-6 defeat for Bayern.
Thirteen-Run Surge Overcomes Berlin-Brandenburg and Niedersachsen
Rebounding from their initial setbacks, the Bavarian squad faced Berlin-Brandenburg/Niedersachsen in their third group fixture on Saturday afternoon. The team from Berlin-Brandenburg/Niedersachsen had not beaten Bayern since 2016. Capitalizing on a 0-7 deficit heading into the second inning, the Bavarian dugout rallied behind energetic cheering and found their offensive rhythm.
The team erupted for 13 runs over the span of an inning and a half, overturning the deficit decisively. Pitchers Sophie Stampfl and Carla Bayer combined with catcher Lea Huber to shut down further scoring, securing a 13-8 victory that restored momentum to the roster.
Sunday morning brought a final preliminary round game against Südwest/Hessen. The coaching staff deployed a blend of seasoned veterans and less-experienced players. Carla Beyer pitched alongside catcher Nelly Rudorfer, highlighted by Fina Schober executing two double plays (DP U6 and DP F6). Carla Beyer contributed a home run at the plate, propelling Bayern to a 15-1 win.
Semifinal Defeat to Nordrhein-Westfalen and Final Standings
Advancing to the medal rounds, Bayern crossed paths with Nordrhein-Westfalen once again in the semifinals. The Bavarian squad battled tightly through three innings, trailing 1-2. However, powerful hitting from the NRW lineup eventually broke the game open, handing Bayern a 2-9 loss and ending their hopes of reaching the championship final.
In the tournament final, Nordrhein-Westfalen defeated Baden-Württemberg 12-0 in four innings to capture the title, a tournament NRW had last won in 2007. The final tournament standings placed Nordrhein-Westfalen first, Baden-Württemberg second, Bayern third, Berlin-Brandenburg/Niedersachsen fourth, and Südwest/Hessen fifth.
Individual Honors and Roster Transitions for the Bavarian Program
Individual excellence was recognized across the tournament, with Bavaria’s Carla Beyer earning Best Pitcher honors. Madita Wenzel of Baden-Württemberg was named Best Batter, and Anna Nowak of Nordrhein-Westfalen collected Most Valuable Player recognition.
Reflecting on the conclusion of the tournament, Martina Dobler noted the departure of five players born in 2010—Carla Beyer, Theresa Hohe, Lena Horn, Emma-Fini Köpf, and Pilar von Kapff—who age out of the U16 bracket. Dobler expressed optimism that these athletes would continue their development within the Bayern-Auswahl U19 program. Additionally, nominated BAW-Rockies players Carina Beyer, Gloria Malz, and Carlotta Weiß delivered solid performances throughout the event.
