Vienna Heldenplatz Draws Quarter Million Fans for Jubilee

Vienna’s historic public square between the Hofburg palace, Volksgarten, and Ring street transformed into a massive outdoor sports venue for the quarter-century milestone. Sport State Secretary Michael Schmidt described the turnout as a great birthday present for the Tag des Sports. The gathering brought children, families, sports fans, clubs, associations, and top national athletes together for a day centered on physical activity.

Skiing Federation Highlights Grassroots Engagement

Tomas Woldrich, head of membership management and grassroots sport at the ÖSV, stated that the event creates encounters, inspires children, and makes movement accessible for all.

Olympic champions Alessandro Hämmerle, Benjamin Karl, and Katharina Huber joined athletes Julia Scheib and Stephan Embacher in accepting honors for their performances.

Swimmers and Football Figures Meet the Public

The Austrian Swimming Federation established an active presence in the green zone near the Heldentor, where visitors tested water polo shooting targets and balance boards used by platform divers such as Nikolaj Schaller. Federation athletes conducted scheduled autograph sessions throughout the day.

Career Farewells Mark the Anniversary Stage

Snowboarder Sabine Payer, who concluded her career during the summer months, attended the celebration to interact with supporters. The athlete described the venue as an ideal setting for sharing athletic enthusiasm directly with the public.

Organizers also introduced a dedicated sports museum to the festival layout. The exhibition space provided visitors with a visual retrospective chronicling 25 years of Austrian athletic history.
