The Evolution of the Players’ Training Camp
The Sindicato dos Jogadores established its women’s football department in 2011 to address the unique challenges faced by female athletes in Portugal. Department Director Carla Couto noted that the initiative has grown through continuous program expansion, pointing to the “Estágio da Jogadora” (Players’ Training Camp) as a core pillar of support. The program provides young players with an elite pre-season training environment designed to improve physical conditioning and career readiness.
This year’s camp hosted 40 participants, incorporating structured workshops covering mental health, financial literacy, and dual-career planning. According to Couto, the department operates daily to advocate for the rights and professional advancement of female athletes across the country, ensuring they receive necessary resources before entering or continuing their competitive seasons.
Enforcing Universal Labor Standards on the Pitch
Contractual stability and the enforcement of the Collective Bargaining Agreement served as central points of discussion during the summit. Matilde Fidalgo, advisor to the Sindicato dos Jogadores, stressed that universal guarantees remain non-negotiable for the sustainable growth of the sport. Women’s football has historically operated within male-dominated structures, making standardized workplace protections a vital milestone.
Fidalgo argued that sports regulations should be gender-neutral, asserting that the protections applied to male professional players must extend equally to female competitors. The union has prioritized combating atypical contracts that leave athletes vulnerable, pushing instead for mandatory minimum standards regarding remuneration and health security.
Safeguarding Maternity and Family Planning Rights
Family planning and maternal rights occupied a prominent position in the union’s strategy, with speakers calling for the complete removal of structural barriers that hinder an athlete’s career progression. Micaela Matos, delegate for the Sindicato dos Jogadores, stated that combining motherhood with competitive sports must be recognized as an absolute right rather than a professional privilege.
Highlighting recent examples such as Diana Silva, the union proposed concrete measures to safeguard players, including the automatic extension of contracts during pregnancy or maternity leave. The union also advocated for the facilitation of medical procedures such as egg freezing to give athletes reliable options for conscious family planning without sacrificing their playing careers.
