A Low-Scoring Duel at West Bund

The championship series was defined by starkly different competitive phases. The opening two games saw lopsided results, with the Orcas winning the first match 11-1 during a heavy downpour, followed by a dominant 14-0 response from the Beijing Zhengda Dragon in the second game. The series finale shifted into a defensive struggle, with both teams held scoreless through the first five innings.

The deadlock was finally broken in the sixth inning. A sequence of hits by Diego, Kou Yongkang, and Perez drove in the game’s only run. With the pitching staff holding the lead for the remainder of the contest, the 1-0 scoreline held firm, securing the title for Shanghai.

A Turnaround Season for the Orcas

For the Shanghai Orcas, the path to the trophy was far from certain. General Manager Zhang Xiaotian noted that the team’s season began with a difficult four-game losing streak. The organization responded by replacing several foreign players and adjusting its management approach. Zhang credited the championship to the eventual cohesion between the local roster and the new international additions, which allowed the team to find their rhythm as the season progressed.

Henry, who was named the Summer Solstice League’s Most Valuable Player, expressed pride in the collective effort. “I came here to win, and we did it,” he said following the trophy presentation.

League Expansion and Professionalization

The 2026 Summer Solstice League featured a field of six teams, an expansion from the four that competed in the earlier Lichun League. The current lineup includes the Shanghai Orcas, Beijing Zhengda Dragon (formerly the Shanghai Zhengda Dragon), Shenzhen Blue Socks, Xiamen Dolphins, Fuzhou Sea Heroes, and Changsha Wangwang.

According to league data, the Summer Solstice tournament featured 229 registered players, including 76 international athletes from 17 countries and regions, such as Cuba, Venezuela, the United States, Japan, and South Korea. Xie Bin, Vice President and Secretary General of the China Baseball Association, stated that this growth reflects the league’s ongoing efforts to advance the professionalization of baseball in China. The tournament was conducted under the guidance of the China Baseball Association, the Baseball Federation of Asia, and the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Sports.
