Otar Kiteishvili addressed the dismissal of Willy Sagnol from the Georgian national team leadership, acknowledging the historic achievements under the former manager while emphasizing the squad’s collective responsibility for recent results. Sagnol departed his post mid-camp following a 1–0 defeat against Northern Ireland, concluding a tenure highlighted by Georgia’s qualification for major tournament play.
National Team Leadership Changes and Player Responsibility
The transition in the coaching staff arrived during an active international window. Following the 1–0 loss to Northern Ireland, Sagnol left his position as head coach of the Georgian national team. Ramaz Svanadze stepped in to assume the vacant role on an interim basis.
Speaking at a press conference regarding the abrupt coaching change, Kiteishvili expressed gratitude for Sagnol’s long tenure. “Big thanks to Willy Sagnol,” Kiteishvili said. “We have a long way behind us and achieved the greatest success in our history. Unfortunately, we haven’t got results lately. The players are aware of their responsibility.”
Return to the Starting Lineup Under Svanadze
For Kiteishvili, the managerial change also coincided with a shift in playing time. Sagnol utilized the injury-plagued Sturm Graz midfielder for only 13 minutes against Northern Ireland. That appearance followed just two substitute outings since Kiteishvili’s return to club action for Sturm.
Prior to that fixture, Kiteishvili noted the gap since his last start. “It’s been a long time, but I played a few games before the training camp—even if I never started. How much I play is decided by the coach,” he explained.
His previous start for the national team came in June during a 2–0 friendly victory over Bahrain. At the club level with Sturm Graz this season, the midfielder has similarly been deployed primarily as a substitute.
Squad Adjustments from the Domestic League
Georgia’s latest squad selection featured three prominent players from the Austrian Bundesliga. Alongside Kiteishvili at Sturm Graz, club teammate Gizo Mamageishvili joined the national team setup.
However, Gizo’s twin brother, Otar Mamageishvili, had to be withdrawn from the roster. The WAC professional was sidelined due to an injury, preventing him from joining his compatriots in the national team camp.
