Niko Springer exited the World Grand Prix in the opening round after a 1–2 defeat against Danny Noppert in Leicester. The German darts professional missed a crucial chance to claim the match after recovering from a slow start, falling short of securing what would have been the title of Germany’s number two.
How the Opening Round Unfolded in Leicester
The 26-year-old Springer faced an uphill battle immediately at the major tournament, dropping the opening five legs straight to trail 0–1 in sets and 0–2 in legs against Noppert, who entered the contest as the eighth seed. Despite the early deficit, Springer mounted a response in the second set. He survived a match dart from the Dutch player and checked out to level the score at one set apiece, shifting the momentum in his favor.
The match ultimately swung on the tournament’s double-in, double-out format, which carries a total prize fund of £750,000. While Springer handled the start rule during his debut appearance the previous year against Stephen Bunting, the opening phase proved costly. In the first six legs of the match, Springer required 20 darts to get away. During his own throw in the deciding third set, he misfired with his first ten darts at the double-20 segment, allowing Noppert to close out a 3–0, 2–3, 3–0 victory.
Stakes in the Order of Merit and National Rankings
Although Springer maintained strong scoring throughout portions of the match, his inability to convert early attempts on the outer ring derailed his comeback bid. In the opening leg, he squandered a full scoring visit simply trying to open his leg with a double. The loss leaves him with £7,500 in prize money and a modest rise in the Order of Merit to rank 37.
A victory against Noppert would have propelled Springer past Ricardo Pietreczko as the second-highest-ranked German player, strengthening his prospects of partnering with Martin Schindler at the 2027 World Cup. Instead, that transition remains on hold as Pietreczko retains his standing.
