Martin Ødegaard Furious After Bernardo Silva Tackle in Nations League Clash

Norway captain Martin Ødegaard reacted with fury after a late challenge from Portugal midfielder Bernardo Silva during a Nations League match in Oslo on Sunday. The incident, which occurred in stoppage time of Portugal’s 2-1 victory, left Ødegaard limping and sparked a heated exchange between the two long-time Premier League rivals.

The confrontation began when Ødegaard attempted to advance the ball with his left foot from a deep position in the Norwegian half. Silva contested the ball from behind, but his right foot missed the ball and struck the back of Ødegaard’s left supporting foot. The referee issued a yellow card to Silva for the foul.

Ødegaard was recorded shouting insults in English at Silva following the collision. Speaking to the Norwegian network TV2 more than an hour after the final whistle, while limping toward the team bus, Ødegaard stated, “This has no place on a football pitch.”

When questioned by Norwegian journalists about the incident, Silva initially asked, “What tackle?” in a video published by the digital outlet Nettavisen. The 32-year-old midfielder, who joined Real Madrid from Manchester City during the preseason, later added, “It’s football, friend.”

Premier League rivalry extends to international stage

The tension between the two players mirrors a years-long competitive history in England. Ødegaard’s Arsenal finished as runners-up to Silva’s former club, Manchester City, in the 2023 and 2024 seasons. However, Ødegaard led Arsenal to their first Premier League title in 22 years last season.

Currently, Arsenal and Manchester City hold the top two positions in the Premier League standings. This sporting rivalry exists alongside a significant legal battle involving Manchester City, which faces allegations of infringing financial regulations between 2009 and 2018. An independent panel of judges reportedly found the club guilty of the majority of 115 charges, primarily related to Abu Dhabi-linked sponsorships and a failure to cooperate with investigations.

Manchester City has denied any wrongdoing. In a letter to supporters on Saturday, club president Khaldoon Al Mubarak maintained that “nothing has changed.” It remains uncertain if the club’s previous titles are at risk of being stripped during future sanction hearings.

Next meeting scheduled for Lisbon

Norway and Portugal are scheduled to meet again this coming Sunday in Lisbon for the return leg of their Nations League group stage match.
