The centerpiece of the trade is Kirill Marchenko, a 26-year-old Russian sniper coming off productive campaigns in Columbus. Marchenko led the Blue Jackets with 27 goals and 40 assists for 67 points across 76 games last season, following a 74-point output the year prior. Because he was heading into the final season of a deal with a $3.85 million average annual value and held restricted free agency status with arbitration rights, Columbus granted his camp permission to discuss numbers with Toronto before finalizing the swap, as Sportsnet reported.
The Six-Year, $75-Million Extension for Kirill Marchenko
Marchenko’s arrival in Toronto came paired with a long-term financial commitment. Agent Dan Milstein announced the agreement on his verified X account, confirming a six-year, $75-million contract extension carrying an annual average value of $12.5 million, according to reports by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
That $12.5-million cap hit places Marchenko near the top of the Maple Leafs’ internal pay scale. His AAV will surpass William Nylander’s $11.5 million while slotting directly underneath Auston Matthews’ $13.25 million figure.
Statistical tracking highlights the speed upgrade Marchenko brings to the Maple Leafs’ top six. According to NHL EDGE metrics cited in league reporting, Marchenko ranked in the 93rd percentile for maximum skating speed and sat in the 99th percentile for speed bursts ranging between 18 and 22 miles per hour.
What Columbus Receives in Return for Matthew Knies
To secure Marchenko, Merzlikins, and depth winger Miles Wood, Toronto surrendered a substantial package anchored by 23-year-old power forward Matthew Knies. Knies registered 23 goals and 43 assists for 66 points across 79 games last season despite playing through a knee injury. Selected 57th overall in the 2021 draft, Knies carried a team-friendly cap hit of $7.75 million through the 2030-31 season.
Despite his production on a line alongside Matthews and Mitch Marner during a 29-goal, 58-point campaign in 2024-25, Knies’ name frequently surfaced in trade rumors stretching back to the March trade deadline, when former management explored deals with Montreal. Elvis Merzlikins and Additional Roster Movement
Goaltender Elvis Merzlikins also moves to Toronto in the transaction, accompanied by 18 percent salary retention from Columbus. Merzlikins appeared in 30 games last season, posting a 14-11-3 record with a 3.40 goals-against average and an .883 save percentage.
Winger Miles Wood rounds out the players heading north. Wood appeared in 54 games for Columbus last season, recording 14 points, and brings physical depth to the forward group after clearing waivers prior to the trade.
