Los Angeles Lakers star guard Luka Doncic declared himself eager to take the reins of the storied franchise following the departure of LeBron James, who left for Philadelphia during the offseason. Entering his first full campaign as the undisputed focal point in Southern California, the 27-year-old Slovenian playmaker aims to steer the team into a new era starting this October.
Stepping Into the Spotlight After LeBron James’ Departure
The departure of James leaves a massive void for the gold and purple, but Doncic embraces the responsibility. Acquired by the franchise in February 2025 following a lengthy tenure with the Dallas Mavericks, the guard is ready to command the floor. “It’s a new challenge, obviously,” Doncic said. “Pero j’ai souvent été dans cette situation depuis que je suis jeune, donc ce n’est pas nouveau pour moi. His commitment to the franchise was evident when his Lakers teammates traveled to Slovenia for a five-day training camp at his home. “C’était important pour moi de leur montrer d’où je viens,” Doncic explained, noting he felt slightly nervous coordinating the visit. “C’est gentil à eux d’être venus. J’ai conscience que ce n’était pas forcément facile, mais ça montre le type de groupe que l’on est.” Last season, before his injury sidelined him, the guard averaged over 33 points per contest.
Roster Additions and the 2025-26 Season Opener
Surrounding Doncic are returning sharpshooters like Austin Reaves alongside fresh faces, most notably center Walker Kessler, who arrived via a trade with the Utah Jazz. Doncic praised the frontcourt addition, calling him a “fantastic” presence who protects the rim and has made major strides offensively. The revamped roster will put its new identity to the test on October 21, when the Lakers officially open their regular-season schedule against the Golden State Warriors.
