James noted that he had envisioned finishing his career in New York. “I have imagined playing in the Garden and ending my career in the Garden,” James said. “But after they beat San Antonio, it was a no-go. I couldn’t do it.”

James identified his close friend Tyrese Maxey as a primary catalyst for his decision to sign with the 76ers. The veteran forward emphasized that frequent conversations with Maxey helped solidify his commitment to the organization.
