Broadcaster Jang Sung-kyu is stepping into the role of a rookie archery commentator for KBS ahead of the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, marking his first major international sports broadcasting assignment. Partnering with legendary Olympic gold medalist Ki Bo-bae, Jang aims to bring accessible, high-energy commentary to viewers while leaning on the established expertise of his co-host.
Stepping Into the Major Sports Arena
For Jang Sung-kyu, joining the broadcasting team for a continental multi-sport event fulfills a long-standing ambition. Known primarily for his versatility across various entertainment and variety television programs, the broadcaster has frequently engaged with sports as an enthusiastic spectator. Stepping behind the microphone for the upcoming Asian Games represents a deliberate shift toward live sports coverage, giving him a front-row seat to South Korea’s premier medal-producing discipline.
“The opportunity to share in the historic moments of Korean archery is an immense honor in itself,” Jang stated regarding his appointment. “My goal is to earn reviews saying that ‘watching archery with Jang Sung-kyu makes the matches more thrilling and entertaining,’ and I will do my absolute best to deliver a sharp, captivating sense of immersion without crossing any lines.”
Partnering with Archery Royalty
While Jang handles the play-by-play narrative flow and audience engagement, technical depth will be anchored by former Olympic champion Ki Bo-bae. Jang expressed complete confidence in his broadcast partner, acknowledging the vast gap in experience while setting clear expectations for his own preparation.
“Ki Bo-bae’s commentary is already flawless,” Jang noted. “As a legend of South Korean archery, her insight into technical mechanics and athletes’ psychological states under pressure is immense. The only variable is me. I am preparing thoroughly to ensure I do not pull down our broadcast.”
Finding a Distinct Voice in Sports Broadcasting
To carve out a distinct identity in the booth, Jang intends to anchor his style in direct audience empathy.
“My strength lies in delivering vibrant empathy and immersion by running at the exact same eye-level as the viewers,” Jang explained. “My aim is to translate complex rules and hyper-tense moments into something intuitive and deeply engaging for everyone watching at home.”

Choosing archery as his debut discipline was a calculated decision, driven by South Korea’s status as a global powerhouse in the sport and the inherent tension packed into every single arrow release. Beyond the upcoming Asian Games, however, Jang maintains broader ambitions within domestic sports. As an official public relations ambassador for the Korea Tennis Association, he has made no secret of his desire to eventually tackle tennis broadcasting as well.

As the quadrennial games approach, Jang shifted focus away from his personal broadcasting milestone to offer a passionate message of support to the entire South Korean archery delegation. The official national roster features prominent veterans and rising competitors alike, including Kim Woo-jin, Kim Je-deok, Lee Woo-seok, Kang Chae-young, Oh Ye-jin, Lee Yoon-ji, Kim Jong-ho, Choi Yong-hee, Choi Eun-gyu, Kang Yeon-seo, Park Jung-yoon, and Park Ye-rin.
