Charles shared his evaluation alongside Dallas Cowboys defensive end Caleb Downs and his brother, Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Josh Downs.

When Caleb Downs asked for his perspective on the league’s best backfield talents, Charles singled out three standout players defining the modern ground game. “Jonathan Taylor, Derrick Henry, and Gibbs,” Charles answered on the program, highlighting a group that blends power, breakaway speed, and pass-catching utility.
The conversation highlighted the generational crossover taking place in professional football. Caleb Downs responded to the ranking by discussing the immediate challenge of facing elite opposition on the field, noting his preparation to meet Baltimore Ravens star Derrick Henry.
“I’m playing against Derrick Henry this week,” Caleb Downs said prior to the Cowboys’ matchup against the Ravens in Rio, where Baltimore ultimately secured a 34-31 victory in a dramatic finish. “I looked at him and I was like, oh man.”

Charles offered high praise for Henry’s enduring dominance, categorizing the veteran runner among the game’s all-time greats while he continues to add to his résumé. “He’s already a Hall of Famer, my friend,” Charles said.
The former Pro Bowl runner expanded on the caliber of talent currently active in the NFL, comparing today’s stars to the legends he competed against during his own career. Charles spent nine seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, leading the NFL in rushing touchdowns with 12 in 2013, before finishing his 11-season career with 7,563 yards, 1,407 carries, and 44 rushing touchdowns. He officially retired in 2019 after signing a one-day contract with Kansas City.
“You play with legends like Pat Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Derrick Henry, Aaron Donald who makes his return,” Charles said. Reflecting on his own era, he added: “I can say today that I played with Ray Lewis. I played with Ray Lewis, and I was like, man, I find myself facing Ray Lewis, Aaron Reed, trying to decapitate me. I was like, man, I’m facing Ray Lewis.”
