Guangzhou will host the International Humanoid Robot Basketball Challenge in April 2027, according to an announcement made by the Information Office of the People’s Government of Guangdong Province.
Tournament Structure and Divisions
The organizing committee has established two distinct competition categories designed to evaluate both core technical proficiency and spectator entertainment value.
The competitive division centers on fundamental basketball mechanics. Robots will participate in five specific events: stationary free-throw shooting, moving three-point shooting, human-robot collaborative passing and catching, a stationary dribbling endurance test, and obstacle-avoidance dribbling layups. These tests are engineered to stress-test bipedal stability, sensor accuracy, and mechanical coordination under pressure.
Alongside the technical events, a performance division will allow teams to program freestyle routines without fixed paths or prescribed maneuvers. These exhibition runs will showcase complex basketball skills, including intricate ball-handling, rapid passing, spinning, airborne tosses, and choreographed rhythm movements synchronized with music.
Engineering Specifications for Competing Machines
Technical regulations for the challenge require strict adherence to humanoid designs, particularly for teams entering the competitive division. Eligible robots must feature a complete humanoid anatomy consisting of a head, torso, dual arms, and two legs, with all structural components connected directly to the central torso. The rules also mandate that the machine's lower limbs must rely exclusively on bipedal walking execution mechanisms.
In terms of operational capability, competing units must demonstrate independent bipedal upright walking and the software intelligence to autonomously recover after a fall. For the freestyle performance division, structural requirements on the lower body are relaxed, but all participating hardware must include a standardized manual controller with emergency auxiliary operation functions and an easily accessible emergency stop button.
Provincial Backing and Strategic Objectives
Officials indicated that establishing the specialized sporting event is part of a broader push to solidify the region’s manufacturing and engineering base for embodied artificial intelligence. With 3000 humanoid robots entering industrial and commercial deployment across the province, the basketball challenge serves as a public-facing benchmark to measure rapid advancements in mobility, computer vision, and real-time decision-making systems.
