Nineteen-year-old Chilean midfielder Ángel Díaz has launched an unexpected chapter in English football, securing a decisive role for Wimborne Town in the FA Cup just months after leaving Colo-Colo without a professional contract.
The young playmaker, born in 2007 and once hailed as a promising talent in South American youth tournaments, departed the Estadio Monumental after management left him out of their plans and failed to offer terms. Rather than dropping to Chile’s second tier, Díaz chose a direct move to Europe, landing at the seventh-tier English amateur club.
FA Cup Heroics in Dorset
Díaz made an immediate impact during the FA Cup Second Qualifying Round against Weston-super-Mare. After entering the match as a substitute, he rescued his side late in extra time by drilling an equalizing shot from long distance past the goalkeeper to make it 1-1.
With the contest deadlocked, the debutant stepped up to take the fifth penalty in the ensuing shootout. He converted his spot-kick to secure a 4-3 advantage, setting up a decisive save by his teammate that sent Wimborne Town through to the next round.
Leaving Colo-Colo and Choosing England
Díaz first caught the attention of observers during the 2023 Flamengo Adidas Cup, where tournament organizers voted him the best number 10. Despite the early recognition, talks with Colo-Colo stalled, prompting the teenager and his representatives to evaluate alternatives outside of South America.
Faced with the choice of joining a local Primera B side or testing his limits abroad, Díaz opted for England. He acknowledged that the physical demands of the English game present a sharp contrast to what he experienced in Chile.

Growing up, Díaz modeled his game after Lionel Messi, practicing body feints and spatial awareness with his father. Beyond his childhood idol, Díaz benefited from firsthand advice while serving as a sparring partner for the Chile national team alongside Alexis Sánchez.
Sánchez urged the younger attacker to use his frame by receiving the ball facing forward and taking defenders on directly in one-on-one situations, while releasing the ball quickly when playing with his back to the goal against taller opponents.
