Fernando Alonso will remain in Formula 1 through at least the end of 2027 after signing a long-term contract extension with Aston Martin. The two-time world champion committed to the Silverstone-based outfit following months of deliberation regarding his future and the current technical trajectory of the sport.
Extending the Aston Martin Partnership
The Spanish driver announced his multi-year continuation with Aston Martin, cementing his place on the grid into the 2027 season. Alonso noted that his decision is rooted in a fundamental enjoyment of racing and a belief in his own abilities behind the wheel. In an interview with BBC Sport, Alonso described the sport as his life, stating that he carries it in his blood and continues to find fulfillment in competition.
The renewal arrives despite the driver’s public reservations regarding modern Formula 1 regulations, specifically the increased prominence of electrical power units. Yet, internal confidence and a perceived competitive edge outweighed those frustrations. Alonso emphasized that he still retains the necessary speed and reflexes to perform at the highest level.
Evaluating Current Competitive Form
Aston Martin’s current challenger, the AMR26, has struggled near the rear of the grid during Grands Prix weekends. Despite the car’s performance limitations, Alonso maintains that his personal execution on track remains superior to several rivals. He pointed to observations made during free practice sessions, noting instances where competitors brake late, lock tires, or commit unforced errors.
“When I sub myself into the car in free practice, I see some drivers braking late in a corner, locking front tires here or there, making mistakes,” Alonso told BBC Sport. “I feel I am fine. Or I am faster than them.” The veteran driver added that watching races from his living room television while believing he could perform better would be an intolerable scenario.
The Influence of Adrian Newey and Honda
Technical leadership was essential in persuading the two-time champion to sign a new deal. Alonso expressed faith in the engineering overhaul taking place within the organization.
“This team has all the ingredients to have success in the future,” Alonso said. He added that Newey was a primary contributor to his decision to stay, praising the engineer’s capability to alter a team’s trajectory swiftly.
