Despite maintaining a position within the top eight, the club’s recent form—marked by four consecutive winless matches—prompted the front office to seek a change in direction.

During his 14-match tenure, Oliveros recorded six victories, three draws, and five losses. His time in Ibagué was also defined by early exits in both the Copa BetPlay, where the team was eliminated by second-division side Deportes Quindío, and the Copa Libertadores, where they were knocked out in the round of 16 by Independiente del Valle.

Luis Fernando Suárez Returns for Second Cycle

Luis Fernando Suárez takes over the reins of the “Vinotinto y Oro” immediately, marking his second stint with the club after previously coaching the team in 2002. Suárez brings extensive international experience to Ibagué, having managed the national teams of Ecuador, Honduras, and Costa Rica in FIFA World Cup cycles. His most recent club experience was with Deportivo Pereira, where he served from June 2024 until April 2025.

Suárez will be supported by a new technical staff, including assistant coaches Fabián Torres and Henry Rojas, alongside physical trainer Iván Niño. The club’s announcement emphasized that this new staff will begin work from this semester to address the team’s current performance slump.

The departure of Oliveros makes him the third coach to be dismissed following the 12th round of the current Liga BetPlay campaign, joining Hernán Darío Herrera of Once Caldas and Hubert Bodhert of Jaguares. Other departures earlier in the season include managers from Cúcuta Deportivo, Deportivo Pasto, Alianza Valledupar, Junior, and Millonarios.

Following the draw against Fortaleza, Oliveros had expressed his desire to remain with the squad, telling the press that he felt “strong” and capable of continuing the project. However, the management opted to move in a different direction, effectively ending a tenure that had been strained by fan frustration and unfavorable results in knockout competitions.

The decision to dismiss a coach is a relatively rare occurrence for Deportes Tolima, a club that has historically seen managers depart via resignation rather than termination.
