One of the NFL’s top cornerback tandems is heading to the sidelines. The Carolina Panthers announced on Wednesday morning that Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson were both placed on injured reserve after sustaining injuries during a 21-18 defeat against the Cleveland Browns.
Quad and Groin Injuries Derail Carolina’s Defensive Backfield
The setbacks hit the Panthers defense in rapid succession during Sunday’s contest. Mike Jackson was the first starter to depart, exiting in the first quarter due to a groin injury. His departure forced 2026 fourth-round draft pick Will Lee III into action, where he logged a career-high 64 defensive snaps. Jaycee Horn left much later, exiting in the final quarter immediately following a game-winning touchdown reception by Cleveland tight end Harold Fannin Jr.
Head coach Dave Canales addressed the media on Monday regarding the severity of the damage to his two-time Pro Bowl defensive back. Canales confirmed that Horn suffered a significant quad injury
, with multiple subsequent reports indicating a tear that could sideline the cornerback for the remainder of the campaign.
Canales emphasized the magnitude of the locker room loss while addressing reporters on the team’s approach moving forward.
Roster Shuffling and Immediate Roster Moves
To offset the sudden departures, the Panthers made a series of corresponding roster adjustments. The club signed wide receiver David Moore and running back Anthony Tre
Tyus III directly to the active 53-man roster from the practice squad. Both players had previously been elevated for Week 3. Veteran cornerback Robert Rochell also returned to Carolina's practice squad.
The defensive backfield depth is severely tested as a result. The Panthers entered Week 3 holding a 1-2 record following a 34-3 victory over the Atlanta Falcons, but mounting physical toll threatens to unravel their early momentum. Guard Damien Lewis and wide receiver Jalen Coker also exited the Cleveland game early, while linebacker Devin Lloyd, safety Nick Scott, and wide receiver Xavier Legette missed the contest entirely.
Upcoming Schedule and Division Standings
Under NFL injured reserve rules, both Horn and Jackson must miss a minimum of four games. Because the Panthers have an upcoming bye week during this stretch, neither cornerback is eligible to return until a Week 9 matchup against the Denver Broncos on November 8.
