Residents in Sector 2 of Caña de Azúcar organized a community Baseball Five tournament, locally known as “pelotica de goma,” at the cancha «Pocho» Casanova Godoy. The event drew more than 47 children and older adults with the primary objective of raising funds to repair and upgrade the neighborhood sports facility.
Community Turnout and Opening Events
The sports day began with a parade along Calle 7, featuring local mariachis who performed to inaugurate the activities. According to local organizers, the initiative brought together community members of various ages for both the Baseball Five tournament and a neighborhood domino competition.
The event received institutional backing from several local organizations, including the Fondo Nacional Antidrogas, the Instituto Autónomo del Municipio Mario Briceño Iragorry, and the Sala de Autogobierno de la Comuna «Apakuana».
Facility Repairs and Infrastructure Goals
Aderlis Maica, who oversees sports production for youth and older adults in the area, explained that the fundraising efforts target critical maintenance needs at the recreational center. Organizers noted that the venue requires urgent work on its roof, walls, flooring, and perimeter fencing.
Maica credited the ongoing sports support to the management of Glaser Rodríguez via the Instituto del Deporte Autónomo Estatal y Municipal. This tournament marked the second fundraising drive held for the facility, though it stands as the first official children’s “pelotica de goma” competition organized at the site.
Expanding Local Sports Disciplines
While Baseball Five is actively promoted at the municipal level, Sector 2 integrated the sport into its local framework to encourage athletic development alongside existing futsal, volleyball, and basketball clubs. Organizers emphasized that the initiative remains open to participants from neighboring areas rather than restricting access solely to Sector 2 residents, aiming to establish the neighborhood as a regional sporting hub.
