Belgium’s under-21 national football team secured a 1–0 victory against Wales on Tuesday at Westerlo in their seventh qualifying match for the 2027 UEFA European Under-21 Championship, strengthening their grip on the top spot in Group I. Local striker Norman Bassette scored the decisive goal in the 8th minute, marking his fifth tally of the qualification campaign.
Early Breakthrough at Westerlo
The Diablotins, led by coach Gill Swerts, entered the contest holding 13 points from six matches. They wasted little time establishing control at the Het Kuipje stadium. Bassette, who plays his club football for Westerlo, found the back of the net in the opening stages of the match to give the hosts an early advantage.
The starting lineup fielded by Belgium featured Lucca Brughmans in goal, supported by a defensive unit of Richie Sagrado, Lucas Noubi, captain Matte Smets, and Josue Kongolo. Arthur Piedfort, Arthur Vermeeren, and Samuel Mbangula patrolled the midfield, while Romeo Vermant, Norman Bassette, and Jesse Bisiwu formed the attacking trio.
Red Card Alters the Dynamic
Wales faced a steep uphill battle before the interval when defender Daniel Cox received his second yellow card in the span of three minutes, leaving the visitors with ten men in the 40th minute. Despite the numerical advantage, Belgium failed to capitalize further on their territorial dominance. The remainder of the match saw no additional scoring, with the Welsh attack unable to breach the Belgian defense.

Group I Standings and the Upcoming Showdown
With the three points secured, Belgium moves to 16 points at the summit of Group I. Denmark sits second with 13 points, having played one game fewer. The Diablotins hold a six-point cushion over third-place Austria, having played one match more than the Austrian side, placing the Belgian squad in a strong position to secure a top-two finish.
The qualification campaign resumes on Tuesday, October 6, when Belgium hosts Denmark in what shapes up as a decisive fixture for the group leadership. The group winner will earn automatic qualification for the final tournament, scheduled to take place in Albania and Serbia from June 17 to July 4, 2027. The best runner-up across the groups will also secure a direct ticket, while remaining second-place finishers advance to the playoffs.
