El Colegio de Educación Especial Nosa Señora do Rosario in A Coruña has launched a pilot program of adapted extracurricular activities to support students with special educational needs and assist families with scheduling.
Program Structure and Activities
The initiative operates Monday through Friday from 15:00 to 17:00 local time, directly addressing a demand raised by parents and guardians through the school’s parent association, ANPA. Municipal officials describe the rollout as a pioneering effort in Galicia and a leading model nationally for inclusive educational offerings.
Three specialized organizations deliver the weekly curriculum. ENKI organizes adapted multisport sessions three times a week. Club Edukajudo leads a judo practice session every Wednesday, while the Asociación Cultural Vita Caeli para la Inclusión Social a través de las Artes provides art therapy classes on Thursdays.
Enrollment and Capacity Figures
Initial projections anticipated ten participants, but the service ultimately accommodated 14 children, representing an increase of four minors over the original forecast. Because nearly all enrolled students participate in multiple disciplines across the week, the total number of filled activity slots reaches 53.

Transportation Challenges and Municipal Response
Despite the high demand and initial success of the pilot, local leadership pointed to logistical bottlenecks involving transit support. Juan Ignacio Borrego, the municipal education councilor, stated that the bus services and transportation subsidies provided by the Xunta are insufficient to guarantee access for more children, particularly those residing in outside municipalities who must commute to A Coruña to utilize the program.
City officials view the current schedule as a pilot phase that could pave the way for broader implementation across other educational institutions in the region once the initial evaluation is complete.
