Madrid – Rafa Mir, the Elche forward, will not face an immediate suspension following accusations of racist abuse directed at Espanyol defender Omar El Hilali during their La Liga match on Sunday. However, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has launched a “confidential” investigation into the incident, leaving the possibility of future disciplinary action open. Mir is expected to be in the starting lineup for Elche’s match against Villarreal this Sunday.
The controversy erupted late in the match between Elche and Espanyol, with El Hilali informing the referee that Mir had made a racially charged remark. According to the referee’s report, El Hilali alleged that Mir said, “You came here on a dinghy,” a phrase widely understood as a derogatory reference to migrants arriving by sea. The referee immediately activated the anti-racism protocol, pausing the match for three minutes.
The incident occurred in the 78th minute, and while the referee Galech Apezteguía halted play, the exchange itself “could not be heard by any member of the refereeing team,” according to the official match report. Mir subsequently scored a penalty in the 90th minute to secure a 2-2 draw for Elche.
Confidential Investigation Launched
The RFEF’s disciplinary committee opted not to impose a provisional suspension on Mir, citing a lack of conclusive evidence. This decision comes as Mir reportedly covered his mouth at the time of the alleged comment, making it difficult to verify the claim. The committee stated it needed to establish the circumstances of the incident and determine any potential disciplinary responsibilities.
This contrasts with the recent case of Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni, who was provisionally suspended by UEFA following accusations of racism from Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior during a Champions League match on February 17, 2026. Prestianni’s suspension came ahead of Benfica’s Champions League return leg against Real Madrid.
“Considering the facts recorded in section 6 of the referee’s report, this Disciplinary Committee has decided to open a confidential investigation to establish the circumstances of the incident and determine, if applicable, the disciplinary responsibilities that may arise,” the RFEF stated in a release.
The situation is further complicated by separate legal proceedings involving Mir. The Spanish forward is currently under investigation for alleged sexual assault by the Valencia court, accused of abusing a woman on two separate occasions in September 2024. Mir is currently on loan at Elche from Sevilla FC.
The incident with El Hilali highlights the ongoing struggle against racism in Spanish football. In recent years, players like Vinicius Junior have been frequent targets of racist abuse, prompting calls for stronger action from league officials and clubs. The activation of the anti-racism protocol in the Elche-Espanyol match demonstrates a commitment to addressing these issues, but the lack of immediate consequences for Mir underscores the challenges in proving such allegations.
For context, the anti-racism protocol, when activated, mandates a temporary suspension of play while the referee consults with match officials and stadium security. The protocol likewise includes public address announcements condemning racism and, in some cases, the potential for the match to be abandoned altogether. The protocol was first implemented in La Liga in 2020, following a series of high-profile incidents of racist abuse.
The Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has already publicly expressed its “unconditional and unwavering solidarity” with Omar El Hilali, reaffirming its “categorical rejection of all forms of racism and discrimination.” El Hilali, who earned one cap for Morocco but hasn’t been called up since October 2025, is a key defender for Espanyol.
The RFEF’s investigation is expected to involve interviews with the referee, players, and potentially other witnesses. The outcome of the investigation could range from a warning to a significant suspension, depending on the evidence presented. The league has faced criticism in the past for perceived leniency in dealing with racism cases, and this investigation will be closely watched by players, fans, and anti-racism groups.
The next match for Elche is scheduled for Sunday against Villarreal. The kickoff is set for 14:00 local time (13:00 UTC). Rafa Mir’s availability for the match will undoubtedly be a talking point leading up to the game, as will the ongoing investigation into the alleged racist incident.
