DALLAS – A hard-fought overtime victory for the Golden State Warriors on Monday night against the Dallas Mavericks was overshadowed by a devastating injury to forward Moses Moody. The Warriors secured a 137-131 win, but the cost may be significant, as Moody was stretchered off the court late in the game with what appeared to be a serious left knee injury.
The incident occurred with 1:13 remaining in overtime. Moody stole the ball from Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg and was driving towards the basket for what looked to be a game-sealing dunk when his left knee buckled, sending him crashing to the floor. Immediate concern washed over the American Airlines Center as Moody clutched his leg in visible pain.
Play continued briefly before officials stopped the game as medical personnel attended to Moody. He was eventually stabilized and removed from the court on a stretcher, receiving an ovation from the Dallas crowd. Warriors coach Steve Kerr described the scene as “gruesome,” and expressed deep concern for his player. “It sure looked terrible,” Kerr said after the game, adding that the team did not yet know the full extent of the injury.
Moody underwent X-rays immediately following the game and will return to the Bay Area with the team for an MRI on Tuesday, according to the Warriors. The results of that MRI will determine the severity of the injury and the timeline for his recovery.
The injury is particularly disheartening for Moody, who had been playing exceptionally well, leading the shorthanded Warriors with 23 points, three rebounds, three assists, three steals, and two blocks against the Mavericks. He had recently returned to the lineup after missing the previous 10 games with a wrist injury. His performance Monday night was a key factor in the Warriors building a 136-131 lead in overtime before the injury occurred.
The Warriors’ victory keeps them clinging to the final spot in the Western Conference Play-In Tournament, improving their record to 33-38. However, the injury to Moody adds to a growing list of health concerns for Golden State. The team is already without Stephen Curry (knee) for the remainder of the regular season, and recently lost Jimmy Butler to a season-ending ACL tear.
Draymond Green was seen comforting Moody on the court before he was taken off on the stretcher, and Curry appeared visibly shaken on the bench. “It’s terrible, we’ve been waiting a long time to get healthy,” Green told NBA on ESPN Radio after the game. “Moses is a guy who does everything well… and tonight he was changing the game for us.”
The timing of the injury is especially cruel for Moody, who is in the first season of a three-year, $39 million contract extension. He is averaging 11.9 points per game this season, a career high, and has been a consistent contributor for the Warriors.
The Warriors’ win, whereas essential for their playoff aspirations, was clearly tempered by the sight of Moody being carried off the court. The team now faces an uncertain future, both on and off the court, as they await further news on their injured forward. The NBA season is a grueling test of endurance, and the Warriors are facing yet another challenge as they navigate a late-season push for the playoffs.
The next confirmed checkpoint for the Warriors is Wednesday, March 26th, when they face the Los Angeles Lakers at home. Updates on Moody’s condition are expected before that game, and will undoubtedly shape the Warriors’ strategy moving forward.
