TORUŃ, Poland – The 2026 World Athletics Indoor Championships are set to commence Friday in Toruń, Poland, with a strong Italian contingent of 12 athletes ready to compete. The action will be broadcast live on RaiSport and Sky Sport Arena, beginning at 10:00 local time (UTC+1).
The first day of competition promises excitement for the Italian team, with the highlight being the men’s triple jump final scheduled for 19:35 local time. Reigning world indoor champion Andy Diaz and Tokyo silver medalist Andrea Dallavalle will lead the charge, aiming to secure more medals for Italy.
Diaz, who set the Italian record at 17.80 meters in Nanjing last year, and Dallavalle, who jumped 17.64 meters in Tokyo, have both demonstrated strong form leading up to the championships. They will face stiff competition from Algeria’s Yasser Mohammed Triki, the current world leader at 17.35 meters, and Cuba’s Andy Hechavarria (17.34 meters). Lazaro Martinez, the 2022 champion, as well adds to the competitive field.
The morning session will feature the heptathlon, with Dario Dester kicking off the Italian challenge in the 60 meters at 10:05 local time. The event includes the long jump, shot put, and high jump later in the day. Filippo Randazzo and Samuele Ceccarelli will then compete in the qualifying rounds of the 60-meter sprint at 10:20 local time, hoping to advance to the evening’s final, scheduled for 21:22.
Alessandra Bonora will also be in action, participating in the 400-meter heats at 11:08 local time, with a potential semi-final appearance later in the day. The 800-meter runners, Eloisa Coiro and Laura Pellicoro, will also begin their campaigns at 12:35 local time.
The afternoon session will see Marta Zenoni and Ludovica Cavalli compete in the 1500 meters at 18:22 local time, followed by Federico Riva and Pietro Arese in the men’s 1500 meters at 18:54 local time. All four athletes will be aiming to qualify for the finals on Sunday.
The Italian team arrives in Toruń following a successful showing at the 2025 World Championships in Nanjing, where they secured two gold medals and a silver. The team is hoping to build on that success and achieve an even greater medal haul at this year’s indoor championships.
