Brussels, Belgium – Former Anderlecht midfielder Lucas Biglia is setting his sights on a return to management, with potential opportunities arising in Argentina, Italy and even a possible homecoming to Belgium. The Argentine, currently honing his skills as a youth coach at Atalanta Bergamo, expressed satisfaction with Anderlecht’s recent resurgence under Jérémy Taravel, while tempering expectations for a title challenge this season.
Biglia left Anderlecht in early February, a move reportedly made in solidarity with then-manager Besnik Hasi. Now, he’s actively exploring options to step back into the head coach role. “I am in talks with two clubs from Argentina and one from Serie B,” Biglia revealed, according to Anderlecht-Online. “A return to Belgium is also not out of the question.”
The 40-year-old’s current role at Atalanta allows him to develop the next generation of talent, but his ambition clearly lies in leading a senior team. His experience extends beyond his playing days; he briefly served as a caretaker manager for Anderlecht before his departure. Biglia’s playing career spanned over two decades, including a successful seven-year stint with Anderlecht where he made over 200 appearances in the Belgian Pro League, winning four league titles. He also played for Independiente, Lazio, AC Milan, Fatih Karagümrük, and İstanbul Başakşehir before transitioning to coaching.
While Biglia is focused on his future, he’s been closely following Anderlecht’s progress. He acknowledged the positive changes under Taravel, praising the team’s quality and deserved success. “I am happy for the players,” he said. “There is quality in the core. They deserve it.”
However, Biglia offered a realistic assessment of Anderlecht’s title prospects. He believes Club Brugge and Union Saint-Gilloise currently possess a higher level of quality, making a championship run a demanding task. “But they can certainly compete with STVV for third place,” he added, suggesting a strong finish and potential European qualification are within reach for the Brussels club.
Biglia’s international career saw him represent Argentina 58 times, participating in the 2014 FIFA World Cup – where Argentina finished as runners-up – and multiple Copa América tournaments. He also captained the Argentina under-20 team to victory at the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship. This wealth of experience, both on the pitch and in leadership roles, will undoubtedly be valuable as he pursues his coaching ambitions.
The Argentine’s comments come as Anderlecht continues to rebuild under Taravel. The team’s recent form has been encouraging, and fans are optimistic about the future. For Biglia, the hope is to translate his passion for the game and his tactical knowledge into a successful coaching career, potentially returning to a club where he enjoyed significant success as a player.
As Biglia weighs his options, the football world awaits his next move. Whether he chooses to return to Argentina, test his skills in Serie B, or make a comeback to Belgium, one thing is certain: Lucas Biglia is determined to make his mark as a head coach.
Anderlecht will next face Genk on March 22nd, 2026, in a crucial Belgian Pro League match. Biglia will continue his work with Atalanta’s youth academy as he evaluates his coaching opportunities.
