Koupací jezírko místo bazénu: Jak si pár vytvořil ráj na zahradě a proč je to životní styl

A spontaneous idea hatched over a glass of wine has blossomed into a remarkable home and garden project for a couple from eastern Slovakia. What began as a simple dream has evolved into a multi-year endeavor centered around a natural swimming pond, garnering attention and inspiring others with its blend of functionality and ecological harmony. The story highlights a growing trend toward integrating natural elements into home design, prioritizing sustainability and a connection with the outdoors.

A Serendipitous Beginning

Anna Maria, who describes her life as “ordinary, even boring,” and her partner found themselves unexpectedly in possession of a building plot in 2017. This chance acquisition sparked a conversation and soon, the idea of building a home began to take shape. “The idea of building a house came to us during long evenings on the balcony with wine,” Anna Maria recalls. The decision was made spontaneously, without extensive planning or a lifelong dream, yet the couple has no regrets.

Beyond the Traditional: The Allure of a Swimming Pond

From the outset, the couple envisioned water as a central feature of their garden. Initially, a traditional swimming pool seemed like the obvious choice. However, they were wary of the potential for enthusiasm to wane over time, a scenario they had observed in others. A fortuitous internet search then introduced them to the concept of a natural swimming pond. “In that moment, we knew that was it,” Anna Maria stated, emphasizing the pond’s natural appeal. Unlike a purely functional pool, a swimming pond offers a living ecosystem, capable of supporting plants, fish, insects, and birds, seamlessly blending into the surrounding landscape.

This natural integration proved crucial, as the property is located near a forest. The pond became more than just a place to swim; it transformed into a focal point for their lifestyle, offering a chemical-free swimming experience in the summer and a unique ice-skating rink in the winter. It’s a space for relaxation, dining, and socializing with friends, becoming the heart of their garden and daily life.

A Seven-Year Journey and a Shift in Priorities

The project, spanning from 2018 to 2024, was a significant undertaking, demanding considerable energy and financial investment. The construction of the house, the pond, landscaping, and garden design proved to be a continuous process. “That’s why we had to say stop and slow down in 2024,” Anna Maria admits. Even now, the garden remains a operate in progress.

Initially, the couple faced skepticism from friends and family who expressed concerns about the pond’s practicality – cold water, dirt, mosquitoes, snakes, and the sheer amount of work involved. However, Anna Maria explains that understanding the philosophy behind a swimming pond was key. They weren’t seeking a sterile, hotel-like environment but rather a connection to nature, accepting its inherent rules and challenges.

While the labor was substantial, the ongoing maintenance of the pond is surprisingly manageable, requiring approximately 20 minutes per week. The majority of the work is concentrated during the spring startup and autumn winterization periods.

Unexpected Attention and a Growing Community

Anna Maria began sharing her story in April 2025, without anticipating a large audience. She was surprised by the overwhelming interest in the garden and pond. Common questions revolved around concerns about mosquitoes, frogs, snakes, and the safety of swimming with fish. However, social media also provided a new perspective. “I often only see what isn’t finished yet. People remind me of everything we’ve already achieved and how beautiful it is,” she shared.

She openly discusses the technical aspects of the pond, emphasizing that the technology – circulation, filtration, and water flow – is paramount. She also addresses the financial considerations, acknowledging that a swimming pond can be more expensive than a traditional pool, particularly due to its size and depth. Operating costs, including electricity for filters and pumps, are also a factor, though the couple utilizes photovoltaic panels to offset some of these expenses.

A Lifestyle Choice

Anna Maria acknowledges that a swimming pond isn’t for everyone. It’s ideal for those who appreciate nature and gardening, while those who prefer sterile environments or fear insects might be better suited to a traditional pool. “A swimming pond is a lifestyle,” she concludes.

One of the unexpected benefits of the pond has been its natural cooling effect on the garden, lowering the perceived temperature by 2-3°C. And what about the mosquitoes? Anna Maria explains that the pond actually fostered a balanced ecosystem. “More insects attracted more animals that feed on them. During the day, birds hunt flying insects, and you’ll notice bats actively hunting throughout the night. In the water, fish and dragonflies do their work. So, since we’ve had the pond, there’s been peace with annoying insects,” she explains.

Future Plans and a Word of Advice

Looking ahead, the couple plans to add a Victorian greenhouse and potentially a workout area to their property. “It looks like as long as we have space on the property, a few more things will be added,” she says with a smile.

Anna Maria’s primary advice to others considering a similar project is simple: plan. A garden created without a concept can quickly become chaotic and difficult to rectify. “A project is like a map. It saves time and money,” she asserts.

The couple currently lives on the property with their partner and several rescued animals, continuing to cultivate their unique and inspiring lakeside retreat.
