Jelgava Athletes Claim Baltic Championship Titles in Indoor Pentathlon
TALLINN, Estonia – Two athletes from Jelgava, Latvia, secured championship titles at the Baltic Indoor Pentathlon Championships held in Tallinn this past weekend. The competition, which took place on March 7th and 8th, saw strong performances from Latvian athletes across the U-16, U-18, and U-20 age groups.
Emīlija Brauna, representing Jelgavas Bērnu un jaunatnes sporta skola (BJSS), Jelgavas Vieglatlētikas klubs, and Murjāņu Sporta ģimnāzija, emerged victorious in the U-18 category, accumulating a total of 4017 points. Her performance included impressive results across five disciplines: 60m hurdles (8.55 seconds), high jump (1.62 meters), shot put (11.24 meters), long jump (5.75 meters), and 800m run (2:16.87 minutes). Notably, Brauna’s long jump distance was the third-highest among Latvian athletes at the championship, while her 800m time ranked sixth.
The U-18 competition wasn’t without its challenges for the Jelgava team. Alise Blaua, also representing Jelgavas BJSS and Jelgavas Vieglatlētikas klubs, unfortunately sustained an injury during the final event and was forced to withdraw from the competition, according to coach Aļona Fomenko.
Adding to Jelgava’s success, Beāte Blaua claimed the championship title in the U-16 age group, totaling 3380 points. Like Brauna, Blaua competed in the 60m hurdles (9.22 seconds), high jump (1.59 meters), shot put (11.34 meters), long jump (5.27 meters), and 800m run (2:43.01 minute).
While individual successes were significant, the Latvian team finished second overall in the Baltic Championships, with Estonia taking the top spot and Lithuania finishing third. The team competition format involves the combined scores of the top four athletes from each country within each age group.
This Baltic Championship served as a key competition for young Latvian athletes, providing valuable experience and a platform to showcase their talent. The event highlights the growing strength of athletics programs in Jelgava, with both Jelgavas BJSS and Jelgavas Vieglatlētikas klubs playing a crucial role in developing these promising athletes.
The success of Brauna and Blaua comes as Latvian athletics prepares for several major international events. Rūta Kate Lasmane is set to represent Latvia at the World Indoor Championships in Toruń, Poland, from March 20th to 22nd, as confirmed by the Latvian Athletics Association (LVS). The LVS calendar also includes the European Cup in Throwing Disciplines in Nicosia, Cyprus, from March 14th to 15th, and the Latvian Winter Championships in Javelin and Discus Throwing in Koknese on March 21st.
For Latvian athletics fans, the coming weeks promise a busy schedule of competition, both domestically, and internationally. The performances in Tallinn suggest a bright future for the next generation of Latvian athletes, and the continued development of programs like those in Jelgava will be vital to sustaining this momentum.
