IMOLA, Italy – Riccardo Bruno, an 18-year-aged Paralympic archer from Imola, Italy, has been recognized by his city for winning the Italian junior title in indoor para archery. The recognition, presented by Imola Mayor Marco Panieri and Assessor Elena Penazzi, celebrates not only Bruno’s athletic achievement but also his remarkable journey of resilience and determination.
Bruno secured the national championship at the Italian Indoor Para Archery Championships in Lamezia Terme less than a month ago, solidifying his position as a rising star in the sport. The ceremony in Imola underscored the city’s commitment to supporting athletes and recognizing their contributions to the community.
From Tragedy to Triumph: A Story of Resilience
Born in Genoa in 2007, Bruno’s early life took an unexpected turn when, at the age of 12, he was stung by a stingray whereas swimming in Costa Rica. The incident resulted in a severe spinal cord injury, leaving him tetraplegic. Following a month of hospitalization in Costa Rica, Bruno and his family returned to Italy, seeking specialized care and rehabilitation.
The Montecatone Rehabilitation Institute became a pivotal point in Bruno’s recovery. It was there, through a comprehensive rehabilitation program, that he began to explore adaptive sports as a means of both physical therapy and personal empowerment. After his discharge, the family chose to settle permanently in Imola, drawn by the institute’s resources and the supportive community.
During his time at Montecatone, Bruno experimented with various disciplines, discovering the therapeutic benefits of physical activity. At 15, he connected with the Obiettivo3 project, a program dedicated to introducing individuals with disabilities to Paralympic sports. Through Obiettivo3, he met fellow archers Alex Labindi and Davide Cortini and initially tried handbiking. He participated in his first camp with the program in Lignano Sabbiadoro in 2022.
Finding His Focus: The Path to Para Archery
While exploring different sports, Bruno revisited archery, a discipline he had initially experienced during his rehabilitation. He quickly found a natural aptitude and passion for the sport, dedicating himself to honing his skills. His commitment led him to join the archery team within Obiettivo3, providing a further boost to his training and competitive aspirations.
“Riccardo represents an extraordinary example of determination, courage, and the ability to seem beyond difficulties,” said Mayor Panieri. “His story demonstrates how sport can be an instrument of rebirth, inclusion, and personal growth.”
Assessor Elena Penazzi added, “I have known Riccardo for several years; I have always seen a passion for the Autodromo and cars in his eyes, but I am particularly happy that he is achieving key results in archery. I wish him to continue on this path and achieve new goals.”
Looking Ahead: Paralympic Dreams and Beyond
Bruno’s dedication to para archery has quickly yielded results, culminating in his recent national title. He now sets his sights on even greater challenges, with the ultimate goal of representing Italy at the Paralympic Games. Beyond his athletic ambitions, Bruno also aspires to complete his education and pursue a career in the motorsports industry, reflecting his long-held passion for automobiles.
The city of Imola’s recognition of Riccardo Bruno serves as an inspiration to athletes and individuals facing adversity. His story is a testament to the power of sport to overcome obstacles, foster resilience, and unlock potential. It’s a reminder that even in the face of life-altering challenges, dreams can still grab flight – one arrow at a time.
Bruno’s next competitive steps are currently unconfirmed, but he is expected to continue training with Obiettivo3 and participate in upcoming national and international para archery events. Fans can follow his progress through the Obiettivo3 website and social media channels for updates on his journey toward the Paralympics.
