Guatemala: Drug Cartel Arsenal – Weapons, Explosives & Drones Found in Huehuetenango Hideout

Guatemala Authorities Uncover Narco Arsenal in Huehuetenango

La Democracia, Huehuetenango – A former liquor store in the Guatemalan municipality of La Democracia has been revealed as a significant arms cache and potential safehouse for a criminal structure linked to drug trafficking. A recent operation by Guatemalan authorities led to the discovery of a substantial arsenal, including military-grade weaponry, explosives and tactical equipment, raising concerns about the escalating presence of organized crime in the region.

The discovery followed a police pursuit of heavily armed individuals, ultimately leading authorities to the property, which was reportedly being used as a makeshift nightclub. According to Fiscal Benjamín Castellanos of the Fiscalía de Delitos Transnacionales, the site was quickly identified as a key location for a criminal organization. “Upon noticing the police presence, these individuals fled into the building, which was guarded by heavily armed people with high-caliber rifles, some of which are for exclusive use by the Army,” Castellanos explained.

A Hidden Arsenal

Inside the seemingly ordinary building, investigators uncovered a staggering amount of weaponry and related materials. The haul included 16 rifles, some of which are reportedly restricted for military use only, approximately 40,000 rounds of ammunition, 117 magazines for long arms, three additional firearms, seven magazines for shorter firearms, and a variety of tactical gear. Authorities also found cell phones, portable radios, melee weapons, motorcycles, bulletproof vests, and a significant quantity of dynamite and other explosives.

The scale of the arsenal suggests a well-funded and organized operation capable of sustaining prolonged conflict. The presence of explosives is particularly concerning, raising the possibility of planned attacks or acts of intimidation. Authorities are currently investigating whether the cache was intended for use within Guatemala or for transport across the border into Mexico.

Five Arrests and Potential Cartel Links

Five individuals were apprehended at the scene as they attempted to evade capture. Those arrested have been identified as Gerardo F., 35. Diego C., 27; Ramiro C., 25; Alfredo C., 39; and a 16-year-old male who has been turned over to the juvenile justice system. Authorities believe the suspects are involved in drug trafficking, money laundering, migrant smuggling, and illegal arms trafficking.

While authorities have not yet definitively linked the operation to a specific cartel, investigations are focusing on a structure with ties to a Mexican cartel operating in the region. “We don’t yet have specific information relating to a cartel,” Castellanos stated. “We are investigating a structure linked to a cartel with influence in Mexico. We believe there is a direct connection to this Mexican cartel and that this structure works with Los Huistas, but this information has not yet been confirmed.” Los Huistas is a Guatemalan drug trafficking organization that, according to a recent U.S. Treasury Department sanction, has ties to Mexican cartels. The U.S. Treasury recently sanctioned Los Huistas for their involvement in drug trafficking.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are exploring the possibility of hidden caches or even remains within the surrounding forested areas. “There is still a possibility of finding a hidden stash or, considering the wooded areas, some type of human remains or a situation of that nature,” Castellanos added.

This discovery underscores the growing challenges Guatemala faces in combating transnational organized crime and the flow of illicit drugs through the country. The operation, involving the Army and the National Civil Police (PNC), highlights the coordinated effort required to address these threats. The Guatemalan Army confirmed the operation took place as part of strategic actions against drug trafficking and organized crime.

Authorities have not yet announced any further planned operations in the area, but the investigation remains active. The focus will likely be on identifying additional members of the criminal network and disrupting their operations. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the pervasive influence of drug cartels and the lengths to which they will go to maintain their control over key trafficking routes.

What’s Next: Guatemalan authorities will continue their investigation into the structure and its connections to Mexican cartels. Further operations are expected in the region as authorities attempt to dismantle the criminal network. Stay tuned to Archysport for updates as this story develops.
