SHERBROOKE, Quebec – The Bishop’s University Gaiters men’s basketball team received a hero’s welcome upon their return to Sherbrooke on Tuesday, despite falling just short of a national championship. The team secured a silver medal at the U Sports Men’s Basketball Championship, marking a significant achievement for the program and the university.
The Gaiters arrived at the Bishop’s University sports center after spending the past several days in Calgary, Alberta, the host city for the 8-team U Sports Basketball Championship. Their journey to the final was marked by resilience and determination, culminating in a thrilling performance on the national stage.
“It shows once again the love of Bishop’s,” said Gaiters player Yanis Ismaël Malanda. “It’s really a small family, a small community. Despite the final result, which wasn’t what we hoped for, the love is still there.”
The championship final, played on Sunday evening, saw the Gaiters narrowly defeated by the Carleton University Ravens, 78-75. Despite the heartbreaking loss, the team’s performance throughout the tournament garnered significant attention and pride from the Bishop’s community.

The Gaiters’ path to the final wasn’t easy. They secured a quarterfinal victory against the Acadia University X-Men before overcoming the University of Victoria Vikes in a hard-fought semifinal matchup. These wins demonstrated the team’s ability to perform under pressure and advance through a competitive bracket.
“It’s really a season where we showed a lot of resilience, tenacity, and adversity. We never gave up,” Malanda added, reflecting on the team’s overall performance throughout the season.
Bishop’s earned their spot in the national tournament as a wild card team, despite falling to the Université Laval in the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ) championship final. This underdog status added to their inspiring run at the national level.
According to Malanda, approximately half of the Gaiters’ roster consists of players in their final year of eligibility. “From my perspective, it’s about knowing the foundation and the values of the team. The team cohesion is something that will remain for years to come,” he stated, emphasizing the lasting impact of this season’s experience.
The success of the Gaiters men’s basketball program extends beyond this recent championship run. Bishop’s University has a rich history in U Sports basketball, particularly on the women’s side. The Bishop’s Gaiters women’s basketball team has captured the national championship twice, in 1983 and 1984. They have too made numerous appearances at the U Sports tournament, demonstrating a consistent level of competitiveness within the RSEQ conference. More information on the women’s program can be found here.
The men’s team’s silver medal finish represents a new high point for the program, building on a foundation of dedication and teamwork. The Gaiters’ performance has not only brought pride to Bishop’s University but has also showcased the talent and potential within Canadian university basketball.
The team’s journey to the final underscored their commitment to representing the province of Quebec with pride. As Malanda stated, “We showed Quebec that we wanted to win until the very conclude.”
Looking ahead, the Bishop’s Gaiters will undoubtedly use this experience as motivation for continued success. The program’s strong foundation, combined with the dedication of its players and coaching staff, positions them for future contention in the RSEQ conference and on the national stage.
The Bishop’s University athletic program, including the men’s basketball team, is a vital part of the university community, located at 2600 College Street in Sherbrooke, Quebec. More information about the team can be found on the RSEQ website.
The Carleton Ravens, who defeated Bishop’s in the final, were crowned national champions. CBC News reported on their victory.
The Gaiters’ next steps will involve rebuilding and preparing for the upcoming season. With a core of returning players and a renewed sense of purpose, the team aims to build upon their recent success and contend for another championship title.
