Bayern Munich Dominate Atalanta in Champions League First Leg
BERGAMO, ITALY – Bayern Munich delivered a commanding performance Tuesday, defeating Atalanta Bergamo 6-1 in the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 tie. The victory comes after Atalanta eliminated Borussia Dortmund from the competition in the play-offs earlier this year and Bayern made a statement in Bergamo, asserting their dominance from the opening whistle.
Josip Stanišić opened the scoring for Bayern in the 15th minute, capitalizing on a corner kick. Michael Olise doubled the lead in the 22nd minute, showcasing skillful dribbling before firing a shot into the left corner. Serge Gnabry then extended Bayern’s advantage just three minutes later, completing a blistering first-half display. Atalanta struggled to contain Bayern’s attacking prowess throughout the first half.
Bayern continued to control the tempo after the break, though they slowed the pace of play somewhat. Nicolas Jackson added a fourth goal for the visitors in the 52nd minute. Olise then secured his second goal of the match in the 64th minute with a well-placed shot. Jamal Musiala, who came on as a substitute, further compounded Atalanta’s woes, scoring in the 66th minute to make it 6-0 for Bayern.
Atalanta were unable to find a response to Bayern’s relentless attack throughout the match. A late injury to Alphonso Davies in the 71st minute saw him replaced by Tom Bischof. Musiala himself was forced off the pitch due to injury in stoppage time. Mario Pašalić managed to pull one back for Atalanta in the third minute of added time, but it proved to be a mere consolation. Prior to Pašalić’s goal, Bayern goalkeeper Jonas Urbig sustained an injury in a collision, leading to a pause in play before the final whistle.
The match was a stark contrast to Atalanta’s recent success against Borussia Dortmund. Bayern’s clinical finishing and tactical superiority proved too much for the Italian side to handle. For Bayern, the victory represents a significant step towards the Champions League quarter-finals.
Stanišić and Tah Seek Revenge
The match held added significance for Bayern defenders Josip Stanišić and Jonathan Tah, both of whom previously faced Atalanta with Bayer Leverkusen. Stanišić, on loan at Leverkusen last season, and Tah were part of the Leverkusen squad that lost to Atalanta in the 2024 Europa League final. Both players expressed a desire to avenge that defeat.
“Of course, that annoys me; it would have been nice, it was a unique chance,” Stanišić said, reflecting on the Europa League final loss. “When you’re in a final, you want to win. We didn’t play well back then and let them be all over us from the start. They also had a strong striker who ruthlessly converted every chance [Lookman]. For me, I absolutely don’t want to lose to Atalanta again – and I’m speaking for Jonathan Tah on that as well.”
Stanišić, who has featured as a right-back and centre-back for Bayern, highlighted Atalanta’s aggressive style of play. “They’re aggressive from the first second, they never back down and deliver 100 percent in every challenge. They also have good individual players and don’t rely solely on fighting spirit. Now it’s up to us to display in the game what we’ve prepared,” he stated. He also noted Bayern’s preparation for Atalanta’s man-marking system, stating they’ve been practicing man-to-man defense for the past year and a half.
What’s Next for Bayern?
Bayern Munich will now turn their attention to the second leg of the Champions League tie, scheduled to be played at the Allianz Arena. The return leg will be a crucial test for Atalanta, who will need to produce a remarkable comeback to have any chance of progressing to the quarter-finals. Bayern, meanwhile, will look to build on this dominant performance and secure their place in the next round. The second leg is scheduled for March 18, 2026.
The win keeps Bayern firmly in contention for European glory, and their dominant display sends a clear message to their rivals. The injury to Jonas Urbig will be a concern for coach Thomas Tuchel, and his condition will be closely monitored in the coming days. The team will also be hoping for swift recoveries for Alphonso Davies and Jamal Musiala.
