Badminton & Handball: Swiss Open Disappointments for Home Teams | SRF Sport

Basel, Switzerland – A tough weekend for Swiss athletes at the Swiss Open in Basel saw both the women’s doubles badminton team of Lucie Amiguet and Caroline Racloz, and the handball team Kadetten Schaffhausen, suffer narrow defeats, dashing hopes for further advancement in their respective tournaments.

Badminton: Swiss Duo Falls Short at Swiss Open

Lucie Amiguet and Caroline Racloz experienced a heartbreaking loss in the opening round of the Swiss Open badminton tournament. The Waadt natives were narrowly defeated by Hathaithip Mijad and Napapakorn Tuungkasatan of Thailand, 19-21, 13-21. Despite a strong start in the first set, building an 18-12 lead, the Swiss pair couldn’t maintain their advantage and ultimately succumbed to their opponents, who are ranked 10 places higher in the world rankings.

The disappointment continued for Switzerland in the individual events, where Milena Schnider also failed to reach the main draw. Schnider came agonizingly close, losing a tight match against Anna Ryberg of Denmark 29-27, 20-22, 17-21, even having a match point opportunity that she was unable to convert.

Live Coverage

The Swiss Open continues this weekend, with the semifinals and finals scheduled to be broadcast live on SRF stream. Coverage begins on Saturday at 11:55 AM and continues on Sunday at 10:55 AM.

Handball: Kadetten Eliminated from European League

In other Swiss sports news, Kadetten Schaffhausen were eliminated from the European League after a narrow 29-30 defeat to Fredericia of Denmark in the final game of the group stage. A draw would have been sufficient for the Swiss team to advance to the round of 16, but they fell just short despite recording more saves (13-10) than their Danish counterparts.

The loss is particularly disheartening considering Kadetten had won the first leg against Fredericia 32-30 on their opponent’s home court. Despite the setback, the team demonstrated resilience and competitive spirit throughout the campaign.

These results mark a challenging weekend for Swiss teams on the international stage, but they also highlight the growing competitiveness of Swiss athletes in both badminton and handball. Fans will be looking forward to seeing how these teams respond to these setbacks and continue to develop in the future.

The Swiss Open continues, offering opportunities for other athletes to shine. Stay tuned to Archysport for further updates and analysis.
