Antonio Escudero Named Vice President of Catalan Football Federation
Barcelona, Spain – Antonio Escudero, currently a vice president at FC Barcelona, has been appointed the recent vice president of the Federació Catalana de Futbol (FCF), the Catalan Football Federation. The appointment, ratified by the FCF General Assembly on Tuesday, solidifies Escudero’s continued involvement in Catalan football administration. This move brings together a veteran of both club and federation leadership, signaling a strategic direction for the FCF under President Joan Soteras.
Escudero, who serves as vice president responsible for the Social Area at FC Barcelona under Joan Laporta, will balance his duties at the club with his new role at the FCF. The decision was approved with ninety votes in favor and twelve against, demonstrating broad support for his appointment within the federation.
A History in Catalan Football
This isn’t Escudero’s first significant role within Catalan football. From 1999 to 2001, he served as president of Girona FC, guiding the club to promotion to Tercera División after a period of financial and sporting difficulties. Prior to his time at Girona, Escudero had a lengthy career as a football referee, officiating matches – and serving as an assistant referee – in Spain’s Primera División between 1973 and 1984. This extensive background provides him with a unique perspective on the game from multiple angles.
Beyond football, Escudero is a successful businessman. He is the president and administrator of his own business group in La Jonquera, and as well leads the weekly publication Hora Nova. He also holds positions as president of the Federation of Hospitality of the Girona regions and vice president of the Confederation of Hospitality and Restoration of Catalonia, showcasing a diverse portfolio of leadership experience.
Strategic Alignment with FCF Goals
The appointment of Escudero aligns with President Joan Soteras’ strategy of strengthening the FCF’s structure by bringing in individuals with deep ties to Catalan football and proven management experience. Soteras aims to bolster the federation’s capabilities and better serve the interests of Catalan football clubs, both in football and futsal. The FCF believes Escudero’s experience will be invaluable in achieving these goals.
The FCF’s decision to appoint Escudero comes at a time of increasing focus on regional football development within Spain. Catalan football has a rich history and a passionate fanbase, and the FCF is working to ensure its continued success on and off the pitch. Escudero’s appointment is seen as a key step in that process.
In addition to Escudero’s appointment, Miquel Barcons was also ratified as a director of the Federation and will serve as the delegate for the Girona regions, a position he had been holding on a provisional basis following the dismissal of Jordi Bonet.
What’s Next for Escudero and the FCF
Escudero will immediately commence working with the FCF leadership to address key priorities, including financial stability, youth development, and improving the overall competitiveness of Catalan clubs. His initial focus will likely be on understanding the current challenges facing the federation and developing a strategic plan to address them. He will be working alongside President Soteras and the rest of the FCF board to implement these plans.
The FCF is expected to announce further initiatives in the coming weeks, outlining its vision for the future of Catalan football. Fans and stakeholders will be watching closely to see how Escudero’s leadership will shape the direction of the federation.
The next scheduled meeting of the FCF board is set for March 25th, where further details regarding the federation’s strategic plan are expected to be discussed. Updates will be available on the FCF’s official website: https://www.fcf.cat/.
