Andrejs Rastorgujevs 9. vietā biatlonā Somijā – labākais sasniegums sezonā

Kontiolahti, Finland – Latvian biathlete Andrejs Rastorgujevs delivered a strong performance at the Biathlon World Cup in Kontiolahti, Finland, on Friday, finishing ninth in the men’s 20-kilometer individual race. The result matched Rastorgujevs’s season-best finish, achieved earlier this season in Sweden.

Despite two shooting errors, Rastorgujevs secured a place among the top ten, demonstrating his resilience and skill on the course. France’s Éric Perrot claimed the gold medal, leading the field with a flawless shooting performance and a finishing time of 44 minutes and 55.7 seconds. Norway’s Sturla Holm Lægreid took silver, 29.9 seconds behind Perrot, although fellow Norwegian Vetle Sjåstad Christiansen rounded out the podium, 47.9 seconds off the pace. All three medalists achieved perfect shooting records.

Two other Latvian biathletes also competed, with Renārs Birkentāls finishing 51st and Edgars Mise placing 87th in a field of 97 competitors. Birkentāls struggled with four missed targets, while Mise had six shooting errors.

Rastorgujevs’s performance began strongly with a clean first shooting stage in the prone position. He quickly established himself among the leaders, demonstrating precision and control. In the second shooting stage, standing, Rastorgujevs continued his impressive form, hitting all five targets and moving into contention for a top finish.

The third shooting stage saw Rastorgujevs nearly flawless until the final shot, which unfortunately missed the target. He recovered well in the final standing stage, hitting all five targets, and maintained his position within the top ten. He finished 3 minutes and 3.8 seconds behind the winner, Perrot.

This ninth-place finish is expected to qualify Rastorgujevs for Sunday’s mass start competition, a testament to his consistent performance throughout the season. Prior to this result, Rastorgujevs had achieved a ninth-place finish in the individual race at the season’s opening event in Sweden.

Birkentāls experienced a more challenging race. He started well, demonstrating accuracy in the first prone shooting stage, hitting all five targets. However, he encountered difficulties in the second standing stage, missing one target. He regained some momentum in the third prone stage, again hitting all five targets. Unfortunately, his hopes for a higher finish were dashed in the final standing stage, where he missed three targets, adding three penalty minutes to his time.

The Biathlon World Cup continues on Saturday with the women’s 12.5-kilometer mass start race and the men’s 4×7.5-kilometer team relay. The women’s 4×6-kilometer team relay and the men’s 15-kilometer mass start race are scheduled for Sunday.

Following the competitions in Kontiolahti, the Biathlon World Cup circuit will move to Otepää, Estonia, and Holmenkollen, Norway, in March to conclude the season.

This performance underscores Rastorgujevs’s continued growth and consistency as a biathlete, solidifying his position as a key athlete for Latvia on the international stage. The biathlon season is reaching its climax, and Rastorgujevs’s strong showing in Finland sets the stage for an exciting finish.

The World Cup in Kontiolahti is a crucial stop on the biathlon calendar, known for its challenging course and demanding shooting conditions. The event attracts top biathletes from around the globe, making it a highly competitive and prestigious competition.

Fans can follow the remaining events of the Biathlon World Cup on the International Biathlon Union’s official website, www.biathlonworld.com, for live results, schedules, and news updates.

Next up, Rastorgujevs will seem to build on this momentum as he prepares for the mass start race on Sunday, where he will aim to further improve his position in the overall standings.
