BIRMINGHAM, England – An Se-young, the world’s top-ranked badminton player, is poised to make history at the 2026 All England Open, seeking to become the first Korean singles player to win the prestigious tournament in consecutive years. The competition, steeped in tradition as the oldest badminton tournament in the world, begins March 3rd at the Utilita Arena Birmingham.
The 24-year-vintage An Se-young enters the tournament riding a remarkable wave of success. She recently secured her second consecutive title at the India Open in January, defeating China’s Wang Zhiyi 2-0 (21-13, 21-11). This victory marked her third tournament win of the year, following triumphs at the Malaysia Open and the Asian Team Championships, where she led the South Korean women’s team to their first-ever championship. Her current winning streak stands at an impressive 32 matches, a testament to her dominance in the sport.
An Se-young’s breakthrough came in 2023 when she won the All England Open, ending a 27-year drought for Korean singles players at the tournament, with Bang Soo-hyun being the last to achieve the feat in 1996. Last year, she added a second All England Open title to her resume. Now, she aims to join an exclusive club of Asian players who have won the tournament three or more times – a group that currently includes only five individuals.
The draw appears favorable for the Korean star, at least in the early rounds. An Se-young will open her campaign against Neslihan Yigit of Turkey, ranked 34th in the world. She has previously defeated Yigit, winning their only prior encounter at the 2022 Indonesia Open 2-0. A potential second-round matchup awaits against fellow Korean player, Shim Yu-jin. While Shim Yu-jin has a past victory over An Se-young dating back to 2018, An Se-young has won all five subsequent matches, including a quarterfinal clash at the 2025 World Championships.
Further down the line, the quarterfinals could pit An Se-young against either Putri Kusuma Wardani of Indonesia or Kim Ga-eun, another Korean competitor. The head-to-head record between An Se-young and both potential opponents is positive; she holds an 8-0 record against Wardani and a 6-4 advantage over Kim Ga-eun. Notably, all victories against Kim Ga-eun have come since An Se-young reached the top of the rankings in 2025.
Still, the most anticipated challenge undoubtedly lies in the semifinals, where a rematch against her long-time rival, Chen Yufei of China, is highly probable. Chen Yufei represents An Se-young’s biggest test, and a player she has consistently overcome recently. An Se-young boasts a perfect 10-0 record against Wang Zhiyi and a 5-2 advantage over Chen Yufei in their previous seven meetings last season.
The All England Open carries significant weight in the badminton world, boasting a total prize pool of $1.45 million (approximately ₩2.1 billion). The tournament’s rich history and prestige make it a coveted title for players across the globe. An Se-young’s recent form and head-to-head records suggest she is well-positioned to contend for the championship once again.
Beyond the immediate competition, An Se-young’s success is part of a broader resurgence for Korean badminton. Her leadership helped secure the nation’s first-ever victory at the Asian Team Championships last month, signaling a potential shift in the balance of power within the sport.
The 2026 All England Open presents An Se-young with an opportunity to cement her legacy as one of the greatest badminton players of her generation. With her unwavering focus and exceptional skill, she is the clear favorite to lift the trophy once more.
Following the All England Open, An Se-young’s schedule remains to be confirmed, but fans can expect further updates and results on the Badminton World Federation (BWF) website: https://bwfbadminton.com/.
