Nikola Topic: From Cancer Battle to NBA Debut – A Story of Resilience & Gratitude

Nikola Topić Makes Inspiring NBA Debut with Oklahoma City Thunder After Overcoming Injury and Cancer

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City Thunder welcomed a resilient Nikola Topić to the NBA court this February, marking a triumphant return for the Serbian guard after a grueling battle with both a knee injury, and cancer. Drafted 12th overall in 2024, Topić’s path to the league was significantly delayed, but his perseverance and the Thunder’s unwavering support have culminated in a heartwarming debut season.

Topić initially suffered a left knee anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear shortly before the 2024 NBA Draft. While the injury sidelined him for the entire 2024-25 season, the Thunder organization demonstrated a commitment to developing the young talent, patiently awaiting his recovery. Though, his journey took another unexpected turn when he received a diagnosis of testicular cancer.

General Manager Sam Presti immediately addressed the situation, emphasizing that the cancer was treatable and that there would be no rush to return him to the court. Presti highlighted Topić’s remarkable maturity and strength, stating in October 2025, “Treatment and rehab are never easy, but Topić is an amazing young man. Anyone who’s been around him knows that he’s remarkably mature, poised, and tough for his age. He has all the qualities to overcome this challenge.”

The Thunder provided Topić with access to top-tier medical care, with knee surgery performed in Los Angeles, cancer diagnosis in Houston, and rehabilitation based in Oklahoma City. Remarkably, just three months after receiving his cancer diagnosis, Topić was back on the basketball court.

His initial return to play came with the Thunder’s G League affiliate, the Blue, where he showcased his skills with 7 points and 7 assists in 16 minutes of action. Despite undergoing three rounds of radiation treatment and still sporting newly growing hair, Topić displayed minimal rust from his two-year absence from competitive play. His draft classmate, Ajay Mitchell, was in attendance to offer support, and he was greeted with applause from the fans. Topić effectively utilized pick-and-roll plays and demonstrated an aggressive drive to the basket when opportunities arose, creating scoring chances for himself and his teammates.

Topić officially made his NBA debut on February 12th, entering the game during a contest against the Milwaukee Bucks. As he stepped onto the Paycom Center court, he acknowledged the enthusiastic applause from the home crowd by tapping the “Oklahoma City” lettering on his jersey. A brief scuffle between Jalen Williams and Bobby Portis momentarily paused the game, but players from both teams quickly intervened to welcome Topić onto the floor. He immediately made an impact, assisting on Jalen Williams’ first possession.

In that game against the Bucks, Topić played 12 minutes, contributing 2 points and 1 assist. He followed up with an even stronger performance in the next game against the Brooklyn Nets, playing 11 minutes and recording 9 points and 2 assists. “It was tough to get my feel back at first, having been away from the game for so long,” Topić admitted. “I noticed I was doing things I hadn’t done before, and it took some adjusting.”

“But I felt much better after the first couple of games in the G League, and I’ve felt much better since my first game in the NBA. I think I’m going to keep getting better and better,” he added.

Topić acknowledged the lessons learned during his recovery from both the knee injury and cancer, stating, “I learned a lot during the process of recovering from the knee injury, and I learned a lot this time as well. It was a unique situation, but I was able to understand how my body reacts to different stimuli, which was a positive discovery. I am truly grateful to be able to stand on the court and play, and to be able to talk to you all.”

While observers may understandably focus on Topić’s journey as a young athlete who battled cancer, he views those challenges as firmly in the past. After a long period of patience and rehabilitation, he is now solely focused on building his NBA career.

Despite being a year and a half delayed in his professional debut, the Serbian native is playing with confidence and poise. When asked about this in a post-game interview, Topić revealed a more youthful side, admitting, “I’m good at keeping a poker face, but I was actually incredibly nervous. It was good if I looked confident (laughs).”

The Oklahoma City Thunder will next face the Phoenix Suns on February 26th, offering Topić another opportunity to contribute to a team with high playoff aspirations. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how the young guard continues to develop and impact the game, a testament to his incredible resilience and determination.
