“Honestly… I think in tennis we are definitely the worst in terms of that. I’ve always said I wish our country had more of a presence around the world, like smaller countries do,” she said.
The two-time major winner has a theory as to why the American public isn’t necessarily the most enthusiastic tennis fan: “I think it’s just because our country is good at so many sports… that makes it difficult,” said Gauff.
If the US team that won the title in 2025 makes it back to the final in Sydney, the 21-year-old hopes that “more fans than last year” will support her country. At least for the Australian Open, Gauff is confident in this regard: “I definitely think that more Americans will come to Melbourne than here.”
Shortly later, Gauff classified her critical statements via X. She refers to the fact that in America a lot of people watch, regardless of who is playing. Whereas fans from smaller countries are at the start with flags and it is therefore clear who they support. “It was more of a commentary for those already watching and how I wish they were as passionate as the competitors from other countries, especially in team events.”
Even without the great fan support, the US team started the tournament with a victory, as planned. Coco Gauff contributed one point in the singles (with a 6:1, 6:1 over Solana Sierra) and one in the mixed doubles (alongside Christian Harrison) in the 2-1 win over Argentina. Gauff lost her second singles match against Spain.
