Sneijder to Ajax: Borst’s Plan & Vink’s Reaction

Hugo Borst would like to see Wesley Sneijder in the role of transition coach at Ajax, he makes it clear in the program The Grandstand van ESPN. The analyst admires Phillip Cocu, who fulfills the same role at PSV. Marciano Vink suspects that the record international of the Dutch national team is not looking forward to that position at Ajax.

“I am very happy with Cocu’s position. He will transfer players between 15 and 21 years old from the youth to the A-selection. A transition coach,” Borst begins.

“I think that’s very good, especially because Cocu is of course a clubman par excellence. And I thought: wouldn’t that be something for Wesley Sneijder at Ajax?”

“Everyone is wondering: what should he do at Ajax? Trainer? No. Assistant? No. Technical director? No,” the analyst continues.

“If Sneijder starts working with those great talents to make them better and transfer them to the first team….”

“I don’t know him well enough, but I would really like it if such a boy could make himself useful at Ajax. He knows the tricks. If Cocu can be a transition coach, then Sneijder can too,” concludes Borst, who was immediately told by Vink that the plan has a small chance of success.

“I understand your thinking, Hugo,” Vink responds. “But Wesley sees himself in an even more important position. At least, that’s what I think based on what he says on television. The defining positions at Ajax also run out at some point.”
