LEGENDARY soccer player, former striker, coach and sporting director of Real Madrid Jorge Valdano gave an exclusive interview to the fan portal MilanNews. The 1986 world champion with Argentina shared his thoughts on Luka Modrić and Kylian Mbappé.
“Modrić is one of the greatest in history”
When asked what he thought of Luka Modrić, who has been dominating Serie A for almost 41 years with Milan, Valdano offered a series of praises: “Modrić is world class, a football machine. He is the most outstanding midfielder that football has seen in recent decades. We are talking about an ’emotional’ player who truly defined an entire football era. In addition, he is a great professional who is capable of suffering on the field. A player who does good for his team and the club.”
Valdano also confirmed Modrić’s place among the greatest players in the history of Real Madrid: “Having your place under the sun in the history of Real Madrid is extremely difficult. But yes, he is in that group of footballers who have seriously marked the history of the club. All the Champions Leagues he has won in this jersey are the best proof of that.”

Valdano scored a goal in the WC final
Given that Kylian Mbappé has been a fan of Milan since childhood, Valdan was asked if the Frenchman, like Modric, will end his career in the red and black jersey: “I hope not. I want him to stay at Real Madrid for his entire career.” At the suggestion that this might happen in his later playing years, Valdano added with a laugh, “Including when he’s old.”
Jorge Valdano played as a striker, in the final of the World Cup in 1986 he scored a goal against West Germany. In his career, Valdano played for Newell’s Old Boys, Alavés, Real Zaragoza and Real Madrid. After his career, he was a coach, sports director of Real Madrid and a long-time football commentator.
