Latvian Athletes Shine at European Championships | Weekend Results

Last weekend, several Latvian athletes won awards at the European Winter Sports Championships.

The biggest success of his career was won by short track runner Robert Kruseberg, who finished second in the 1500 meter distance in Tilburg (Netherlands). In the final, only the host Jens van’t Vout, who won the European champion title for the third time, was faster than him, but for Kreuzberg, the silver is the first medal in the championship of the Old Continent.

In luge driving, the European Championship took place at the same time as the World Cup stage at the Oberhof track (Germany), Latvia, represented by Kristers Aparjods, Elīna Bota, Mārtiņš Bots/Roberts Plūme and Anda Upīte/Madara Pavlova, won bronze medals in the team relay. Gold for the home team Germans, silver for the Austrians, of which ours were less than a second behind. Individually, Aparjod was the highest, remaining immediately behind the podium (only 0.099 seconds separated him from the third place). In the U-23 rating, silver for Kaspars Rink.

Skeletonists competed in the European Cup in Winterberg (Germany), where they also handed out continental championship medals for young people. Marta Andžane won both the cup competition and became the champion in the U-20 and U-23 age groups. Dāvis Valdovskis also won two golds in the youth competition.

On the other hand, at the European Figure Skating Championship in Sheffield (Great Britain), Denis Vasilijevs placed ninth, and Fedirs Kuliš placed 15th. In the women’s competition, Nikola Fomchenkova remained in 37th position, but the Estonian Nina Petrokina became the European champion for the second year in a row.
