Harrods Gath & Chaves: Argentine Tennis History

The Belgrano institution is an emblem of Argentine tennis

In the framework of Argentine tennis there are institutions that play a decisive structural role. The club Harrods Gath & Chaves is one of them: a historical entity of the City of Buenos Aires that, for decades, has maintained a constant presence in the Interclub circuit of the Argentine Tennis Association (AAT) and which currently combines tradition, modernization and competitive identity.

Founded as a social and sports club for employees of two large commercial stores of British origin, Harrods and Gath & Chaves, the club was born with a clear vision: to offer a space for recreation, sports and community belonging. “The original idea was to consolidate the familythat the children of employees could grow up in freedom, with the help of sports,” he explains to Infobae Ricardo Ambrosiopresident for almost two decades of the institution based in Viceroy of the Pine 1480in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Belgrano.

“I don’t think there is too much difference between what the founders thought and what we think today regarding the role of sport in the integral formation of a person,” he adds.

The turning point came in the 80s, once both companies stopped operating in Argentina. Since then, and far from dissolving, the club redefined its identity. “The statute was modified so that not only employees of Harrods and Gath & Chaves could join, but any neighbor of the City or Province of Buenos Aires”mentions Ambrosio.

In this process, Harrods Gath & Chaves signed an agreement with the then Municipality of Buenos Aires, during the management of Facundo Suarez Lastra (he was mayor between 1987 and 1989), which included financial contributions and the transfer of spaces so that Buenos Aires public schools could use the club as a headquarters for physical activities. That decision consolidated the social profile of the institution and laid the foundations for its sustained growth: a few years ago it had 1,300 members and today exceeds 4700.

The institutional evolution was accompanied by a strong investment in infrastructure and organization. The club currently has a professional synthetic grass soccer field, a state-of-the-art gym, tennis courts under permanent maintenance and a professionalized administrative structure. “We have clear partner response protocols, a contingency and continuity of operations manual and a risk matrix that covers everything from a power outage to a storm,” details Ambrosio.

At Harrods Gath & Chaves, social life takes center stage, with spaces dedicated to the elderly, family gathering areas and a large barbecue area that functions as a meeting point. “At five in the afternoon, The club is like the backyard of your house: The kids leave school, play sports and the parents stay sharing a coffee. That’s Harrods too.”portrays Ambrosio.

Tennis is the alma mater of Harrods Gath & Chaves. From an inclusive approach, the club offers recreational tennis, private lessons and a tennis school that aims at both initiation and improvement. “We have a reputation that members integrate quickly. That is key so that tennis is not a solitary sport in our club,” explained Ambrosio.

That spirit is especially reflected in the circuit of AAT Interclubswhere Harrods established itself as a relevant player. In the 2025 edition, the club presented competitive formations and reached the semifinals, reaffirming a sports policy based on belonging, innovation and the solidity of its teams.

Over the last few years, Harrods has fielded players with experience on the professional circuit in Interclubs, including ATP-ranked tennis players, combined with youth players and development projects. In The Finals that were held last month at the Air Force Circlein Vicente Lopezfigures such as Camilo Ugo Carabelli (47th in the ATP ranking), Alex Barrena (188th) and Guido Andreozzi (30th in the doubles classification)among others.

Beyond its proper names, Harrods’ strength lies in its continuity: few institutions maintain a high competitive level in both branches for so long.

“We want to define a masterplan with a consulting firm that will show us the path for the next five years. The idea is to continue growing in order, without losing our identity”Ambrosio projects.

The link with the Argentine Tennis AssociationAccording to the president, it is fluid and constructive. And the objective remains the same: to consolidate an open, modern and competitive club, where sport functions as a tool for training and belonging.

Ambrosio concludes: “Harrods is beautiful because of the spirit of empathy, because of teamwork and because of human quality. This is not improvised: it is built with affection, professionalism and time.”
