Five months before the start of the World Cup, the national team found their quarters. Julian Nagelsmann’s team resides in North Carolina in a “Norman Renaissance-style mansion in the late 1920s.” Sporting events are also convincing.
The German national team starts the World Cup on June 14th with the game against Curacao. The game against the blatant outsider takes place in Houston. Five months before the tournament it is also clear where the national team will have their headquarters in the USA. Julian Nagelsmann’s team will reside in the hotel “The Graylyn Estate” in North Carolina. The sprawling property is located north of Winston-Salem, a city of 250,000.
“Just minutes from downtown Winston-Salem, Graylyn was once the estate of Bowman and Nathalie Gray, who built the Norman Renaissance-style mansion in the late 1920s. Today, Graylyn is one of the most charming and historic hotels in the country, while also serving as an elegant and desirable conference center with 85 guest rooms and unique event spaces,” the hotel’s website states.
The national team will train on the grounds of Wake Forest University, which is just a few minutes from the hotel. The media center will also be set up on the university campus.
“The most important thing from a coach and team perspective is the proximity to the pitches. We have three football pitches here that are in very, very good condition and meet all the demands we have from a sporting perspective. And we can reach them on foot or by bike in less than ten minutes,” says Nagelsmann. This is a crucial factor: “Due to the long distances in the USA, we cover long distances anyway, which we would therefore like to avoid as much as possible in everyday training.”
“The best possible conditions for a successful tournament”
Houston in Texas is 1,770 kilometers from the hotel, the second group game against the Ivory Coast in Toronto is 1,150 kilometers away and the team has to travel over 900 kilometers to New Jersey for the game against Ecuador.

The national team should then recover from the strain of travel in a posh hotel. “With this team base camp we are creating the best possible conditions for a successful tournament. The conditions are optimal – both in terms of sport and infrastructure,” says DFB managing director Andreas Rettig.
The national team will leave Frankfurt for Chicago on June 2nd to prepare for the friendly against the USA on June 6th. The team will then travel to the team headquarters in Winston-Salem. “We have great conditions here, both on the pitch and outside the green grass,” said Nagelsmann.
