Two weeks before the Milan-Cortina Olympic Games, what better preparation than the legendary Streif track in Kitzbühel? And it was Giovanni Franzoni who won, this Saturday morning, the most prestigious descent of the alpine ski season.
With his bib number 2, the Italian immediately established a reference time. Firmly installed in his leadership chair, he had to wait for the great favorite of the race, Marco Odermatt, to pass by to tremble. The Swiss, broad leader in the general classification of the World Cup and winner of three of the four downhills contested this season, failed seven hundredths behind Franzoni. This Kitzbühel descent therefore continues to be the only monument that escapes Marco Odermatt’s gigantic prize list.
Nils Allègre fourth
Only Franjo von Allmen seemed to have the pace to compete with Franzoni and Odermatt on the Streif this Saturday, but the Swiss made a big mistake at the end of the course, even depriving him of a podium.
It is therefore another Italian, Florian Schieder, who climbs to the third step of the podium, for a small hundredth ahead of Nils Allègre (4th). An inevitably frustrating result for the Frenchman, but also very encouraging two weeks before the Milan-Cortina Olympic Games.
Adrian Smiseth Sejersted, who delighted the public with an incredible rescue during the Super-G on Friday, had a quieter race.
