Club Brugge Champions League Win: Fans Celebrate Revenge

Toon Donné, who crossed over from Leuven, has been coming to Club Brugge matches for many years: his very first European match was in Marseille, in the Champions League of 1992-1993. “We lost 3-0 there. Rightly so, completely without a chance. If you can take revenge today, at home, and also completely rightly: that’s enjoyment. It’s just incredible, you can’t describe it. Winning such a last match 3-0 is great. What Club Brugge continues to show in Europe is very nice, and we enjoy that.”

“Our hearts smile”

“This means a lot to me,” says Marc Cattoor from Oostkamp. “We didn’t really expect it, but we certainly hoped for it. I’m glad we’ve advanced to the next round.” Friends Lene Druyts and Charline Wegsteen were also relieved afterwards. “Our hearts are smiling. We are very happy, we should never have expected something like this.”

“It was definitely worth it,” says Ruben De Block. “It was an intense match, but after such a start it couldn’t really go wrong. Before the match I was more stressed than during half time, let’s put it that way. I am very content, euphoric.”

Provincial team

David Mestdagh summed it up poetically. “We are the top team nationally, but we are one in Europe provincial team. Yet we do it several times, from the 70s to today. I think that every lowlander, from Friesland to Arras, can be proud that Club Brugge is achieving such achievements.” He also had a special word of thanks for captain Hans Vanaken, whom he describes as “the driving force of the team for 10 years”.

“Great and unexpected,” Steven Vervaeke describes the competition. “It was 2-0 fairly quickly, then we had to hope that we would hold on. There were nerves, it could have gone either way. But Simon Mignolet played a world-class match, and to then score that 3-0 at the end: that completes it. It’s great that they continue against a good Olympique Marseille with all those big names.”
