Triumph with basketball: Regional stars will become FIBA world champions in 2023
For a long time, successful Germans in the original American sport of basketball were a rarity. Dirk Nowitzki stood out from the crowd for a long time. Until Dennis Schröder and Daniel Theis and the 2023 national basketball team came and won the World Cup. Schröder and Theis, both children of the region – Schröder was born in Braunschweig, Theis in Salzgitter – began their professional careers together at SG Braunschweig. Since then, both have made basketball history. He won the German championship three times and was NBA runner-up in 2022 with the Boston Celtics.
His friend from his youth, Dennis Schröder, is now one of the most famous and successful German athletes. In terms of sport, he stood out early on for his defensive skills and accuracy. The Braunschweiger was a key figure in the national basketball team. His greatest success came at the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup, when he led the national team to its first World Cup title.
Schröder’s unique personality and his social commitment stood out from the start. They not only led to him being selected as one of Germany’s two flag bearers at the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, but were also crucial for the founding of the Dennis Schröder Academy, which aims to promote young basketball talent in Braunschweig.
