Monged Elneel, Sudan’s goalkeeper, caused the biggest scare of the current African Cup of Nations, which is being played in Morocco. Today, the Sudanese were facing Equatorial Guinea at the Mohamed V stadium, in Casablanca, in the second round of Group E of the competition when, in the 37th minute of the first half, the goalkeeper was walking towards the crescent of his area and fell unconscious, practically face down on the pitch.
Elneel was attended to promptly. After tests carried out by the medical team, including a blood sugar test, he remained on the field and played a prominent role in his team’s victory. The game, which was 0-0 when Monged Elneel went down, ended 1-0, with an own goal from Saul Coco in the 29th minute of the second half. It was Sudan’s first championship triumph in more than a decade.
“Goalkeeper Monged Abuzaid stood firm like a wall, orchestrating a defense that absorbed wave after wave of attack before counterattacking,” described the Confederation of African Football page, which does not mention the incident.
