FIP president Giovanni Petrucci, accompanied by FIP general secretary Maurizio Bertea, met today in Rome with FIBA Europe president Jorge Garbajosa and FIBA Europe executive director Kamil Novak.

Many topics of global interest were addressed during the visit, which was an opportunity to delve deeper into the current state of the dialogue between FIBA and the NBA with the declared objective of launching a new European League.

This scenario involves the creation of a League, starting from the 2027/2028 season, made up of 12 selected clubs plus 4 other clubs that will access it on the basis of a competitive, meritocratic and pyramid model. All participating clubs must always and in any case take part in the highest national professional championship.

The international calendar will observe the breaks necessary for the release of athletes called up by their respective national teams, overcoming the problems faced in recent seasons.

President Petrucci, at the end of the meeting, which took place in the usual climate of great cordiality, renewed his sense of the broadest Italian support for the current FIBA governance.
