Jrue Holiday: Handling the Trade from Boston

Six months ago, the Celtics decided to sacrifice Jrue Holiday by sending it to Portland (in exchange for Anfernee Simons). An outcome for which he was in some way preparing, thanks to the honesty of Brad Stevens.

« Brad made me understand that a transfer was possible and I am grateful to him. He even told me that it might not happen and that he didn’t know. But it’s just Brad in the end, and I respect him for having these kinds of delicate discussions and being able to say something like that. I’m really glad he was able to warn me fairly » tells the leader for The Athletic, about his former leader.

Financially, the situation was no longer tenable Boston and Jrue Holiday knew it well: “ We know a little about basketball, we know how it works in terms of money and not everyone could stay. We knew there would be change, but we didn’t know what exactly. I don’t think I speculated or anticipated it, but when you look at it from a business perspective, we suspected there would be change. »

Champion with the Celtics in 2024, the leader could not be retained by the Massachusetts franchise. It also let Kristaps Porzingis, Al Horford and Luke Kornet slip away, for reasons of savings, at the heart of this season a priori without great ambitions after the serious injury of Jayson Tatum.

A new challenge that suits him

« Not really surprised ” by this sort of thing at this point in his career, Jrue Holiday quickly turned to his ” new opportunity » among the Blazers. The Blazers who, in 2023, had already picked him up from the Bucks, before immediately sending him to Boston to allow him to join a title contender.

« The fact that they came back to me meant that they really wanted me and I loved that » says the 35-year-old player. “ It was exciting to experience something new. Especially at my old age, being able to land in a situation where I can transmit a little more and be an example. »

For now, Jrue Holiday’s debut in Portland is not necessarily ideal, as he has been out for a month and a half because of his calf. At least, he had taken the opportunity before that to raise his individual statistics (16.7 points, 8.3 assists, 5.3 rebounds and 1.6 interceptions), after his two more discreet years with the Celtics.

« We always have to sacrifice something. And I think it’s the willingness to do that that makes everyone a little better afterwards. Maybe leading by example pushes others to sacrifice a little too. But I think I have always been this type of player and the fact of finding a more important, central role is rather pleasant » concludes the one who also appreciates being closer to his family.
