Bayern vs BVB: Goalkeeper Showdown

FC Bayern intensively explored the goalkeeper market last year and apparently also had a keeper from the immediate BVB environment on the list. A transfer didn’t happen in the end, but history shows how specifically the Munich team is pushing ahead with their plans behind Manuel Neuer.

FC Bayern has been working intensively on the future of its goalkeeper position for some time. Even if Manuel Neuer continues to be the face between the posts, those responsible at Säbener Straße know that the captain’s time is coming to an end. In this context, it is not surprising that the Munich team intensively examined several candidates last spring. One of them: Diant Ramaj.

As the BILD reportedthe 24-year-old was on the German record champions’ internal list of candidates before he moved from Ajax Amsterdam to Borussia Dortmund. Ramaj, who is currently playing on loan for 1. FC Heidenheim, was considered an interesting profile player – young, capable of development and strong in building up the game. However, a transfer did not take any concrete form. The reason: doubts about his temperament.

Why Bayern stayed away from Ramaj

Internally, Ramaj is said to have been considered a so-called “hothead” by the Bayern bosses. This very attribute ultimately became a deal-breaker. In Munich, they weren’t looking for a goalkeeper who was convincing in terms of sport, but who carried risks in terms of character – especially not in a sensitive phase when it was about the medium-term successor to a club icon like Manuel Neuer.

Instead, FC Bayern decided on Jonas Urbig at the end of January. From the point of view of those responsible, the young keeper brings exactly what you are looking for: calmness, game intelligence, development potential – and the willingness to grow step by step. Urbig has already confirmed this assessment and, with several stable performances, recommended itself as a serious option for the future.

Ramaj’s future in Dortmund remains open

Ramaj’s path has been checkered so far. After moving to Borussia Dortmund at the beginning of 2025, he initially went on loan to FC Copenhagen, then took the next step to Heidenheim last summer. There the keeper gains valuable Bundesliga experience and is regularly the focus of international scouts. Representatives of Arsenal FC are said to have been there several times to observe Ramaj.

The 24-year-old will initially return to BVB in the summer of 2026. The situation there is clear: If Gregor Kobel stays, there is little prospect of playing time. A new move – possibly to the Premier League – is therefore considered realistic. For FC Bayern, however, the Ramaj issue is closed. With Urbig, the Munich-based company already has its ideal candidate for the future in-house.
