The stark reality of the difference between cup play adn league competition has hit the Haarlem-Kennemerland first team hard in recent weeks.
The team had enjoyed a promising preseason, topping their groups in both the Haarlem Region Cup and the KNVB Cup. This success fueled quiet confidence and aspirations for a strong promotion push this season. However, the opening two league matches delivered a harsh dose of reality. Experienced sides Zwanenburg and Urban Talent exploited the young Haarlem-Kennemerland squad, coached by Roeland Bosman, with their mature football, resulting in two disappointing defeats.
Redemption arrived last Saturday with an away victory against United/Davo. Haarlem-Kennemerland started with focus, and attacker Bart de Koning quickly put them ahead 1-0. Yet, their defensive association faltered midway thru the first half, allowing a wind-assisted shot from United to equalize past goalkeeper Melle Geerlings. Just before halftime, Bart de Koning struck again, securing a crucial 2-1 lead heading into the break.
The second half was a tense affair for an extended period. United, resolute not to concede defeat easily, pressed hard for over thirty minutes. The breakthrough came in the 76th minute when Benjamin Hoek scored a vital third goal, effectively breaking United’s resistance. From there, Haarlem-Kennemerland found their rhythm, cruising to an remarkable 7-1 victory. A standout performance came from Omar Kaddouri, who netted a remarkable hat-trick in just five minutes.
“Of course, you hope for a different start to the league, but the season is still very long,” stated coach Roeland Bosman, expressing his confidence despite the initial setbacks. I see the potential of this group every week and beleive that we can compete at the top of the table.
He added, This victory is a great first step.
This win, securing the first three points of the season, provides a much-needed boost. While the initial league results were a wake-up call, the team’s ability to bounce back and secure such a dominant victory demonstrates their resilience and underlying talent. The challenge now is to maintain this momentum and translate their cup-form consistency into league success.
