On September 28, the Chongzhou Xuefu Primary School Sports Group hosted a subject teaching and research event, a key component of their initiative to enhance physical education through “class research” activities.
The session featured a dynamic basketball lesson for fourth graders, focusing on the fundamental skill of “passing the Basketball on the Chest.” Physical education teacher Chen Ao led the class, emphasizing a student-centered approach that blends learning with fun. The goal was to shift students’ mindset from passive reception to active engagement, fostering a desire to learn. Through structured, layered practice and collaborative group research, students were encouraged to move beyond simply knowing a skill to actively applying it.
Teacher Chen Ao employed diverse, multi-angle demonstrations to illustrate proper chest passing technique. Key points, such as “pushing the ground, stretching the arms, turning the wrists, and fingers,” were reinforced with memorable rhymes like “one kick, two stretch, three turn, and four moves.” Engaging game activities further solidified these techniques, creating a classroom surroundings that was both rigorous and lively.
During the practice segment, students engaged in group exercises tailored to their individual abilities. The progression moved from stationary imitation drills and ball-handling practice to dynamic high and low passes and catches. This approach aimed to help students achieve a benchmark of 20-40 accomplished passes and catches per minute, with differentiated goals for various skill levels. Beyond improving basketball proficiency, this teaching methodology was designed to build student confidence and promote teamwork.
Addressing a need for enhanced lower body strength observed during the class, Teacher Chen Ao incorporated exercises like leg raises with ball touches and ball-holding pivots. These activities were strategically implemented to develop students’ leg and core strength, contributing to a more holistic growth of their athletic capabilities.

Following the practical presentation, all physical education teachers convened in the Sports Office for a comprehensive class evaluation and discussion. Guided by the latest curriculum standards and utilizing new textbooks, the educators engaged in a robust exchange of ideas.
This teaching and research initiative is credited with enhancing the instructional organization skills of the school’s younger teachers and further advancing the implementation of high-quality physical education programs across the school. (Reported by: Li Yanan; Photography: Yan Kaishan)
